Men's link necklaces: which one to wear with what
The right link necklace depends less on the chain than on what you wear it with. A necklace that looks right over a t-shirt can disappear under a shirt collar, and one that suits a suit can look thin at the beach. This page gathers our men's link necklaces, plain chains and pendant pieces, in stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium), in silver-tone, gold-tone or black. Here they are matched to five everyday outfits. To choose a chain step by step by width, length, link and finish, use our main men's chains guide.
Outfit by outfit
| Outfit | Width | Length | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew neck t-shirt | 4 to 6 mm | 20" to 22" | Cuban or rope, over the tee |
| Open shirt, one or two buttons | 3 to 4 mm | 20" | Figaro or wheat |
| Buttoned shirt or suit | 1.2 to 2 mm | 18" to 20" | Fine box chain, under the shirt |
| Beach and summer | 2 to 4 mm | 18" to 20" | Flat snake or bare steel rope |
| Pendant over a tee | Chain sold with the pendant | 22" to 24" | Medallion or cross necklace |
The details that make it work
Over a t-shirt
A chain on top of a tee needs some width to stand out against the fabric. The Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 6 mm reads clearly over a t-shirt; 4 mm is quieter, 8 mm is a statement.
With an open collar
This is where a patterned link shines, because skin is the background. The Figaro Link Chain Necklace in 3 or 4 mm at 20" sits right at the collarbone, framed by the collar.
With a suit
Keep it fine and close. The Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace in 1.2 or 1.5 mm disappears under a buttoned collar and shows only when you loosen your tie.
At the beach
Steel does not mind salt water. Choose bare steel if you swim often: there is no plating to wear. Rinse it in clean water after the sea or the pool.
With a pendant
Pendant necklaces on this page come on their own chain, mostly around 22" to 24", which places the pendant on the upper or mid-chest over a tee.
Not sure about the length? Our men's 20 inch chains page explains why 20" suits most men.
Care
You can keep these necklaces on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool. Rinse after salt water or chlorine, dry with a soft cloth, and put perfume on before the necklace. On gold-tone and black, the color is a plating that wears with friction. Every necklace has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns, and shipping is free over $60.
Link necklace FAQ
Should a necklace go over or under the shirt?
Over a t-shirt for a chain of 4 mm and up; under a buttoned shirt for a fine chain. With an open collar, it simply rests on the skin.
Can I wear a link necklace with a suit?
Yes. Choose a fine chain, 1.2 to 2 mm, at 18" to 20", so it stays hidden under the collar.
Which link necklace is best for every day?
A 3 to 4 mm chain at 20" in bare steel. It goes with almost any outfit and needs very little care.
