A curb chain for your pendant: width, length and bail
A curb chain is one of the best chains to carry a pendant: its links are strong and open enough to let a cross or a medallion hang straight. This page is about choosing a curb chain for a pendant you already own, or buying both together. For the full guide to our curb chains, see the main curb chain necklaces collection.
All chains here are stainless steel or titanium steel, bare silver-tone or plated in gold-tone or black.
Matching the chain to the pendant
| Pendant | Curb chain width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Small cross or tag, under 1.2" | 4 to 6 mm | 20" to 22" |
| Medium cross or medallion, 1.2" to 2" | 6 mm | 22" to 24" |
| Large pendant, over 2" | 6 to 8 mm | 24" |
The rule: the chain should look strong enough for the pendant, but not wider than the pendant's top. A heavy pendant on a thin chain looks fragile; a wide chain under a small cross hides it.
Check the bail first
The bail is the ring or loop at the top of the pendant. The chain, clasp included, must slide through it. Measure its inside opening: it should be a little wider than the chain. Flat Cuban links are stiffer, so a classic curb or a narrow Cuban works better here.
The best curb chains here for a pendant
Heavy Curb Chain Necklace in 6 mm
The Heavy Curb Chain Necklace in stainless steel, silver-tone or gold-tone, in 6 mm and 22" or 24", is our first pick for a medium pendant.
Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 4 mm
The Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 4 mm and 22" carries a small cross or tag. It also comes in black.
A cross that comes with its chain
The Classic Cross Pendant Necklace is a minimalist titanium steel cross, black or gold-tone, sold on a matching chain of about 23.6" (60 cm). For more crosses, see our cross chains.
Wearing a curb chain with a pendant
Inside the shirt for work, outside over a T-shirt on weekends. Keep the chain and the pendant in the same tone, and skip other necklaces so the pendant stays the focus.
Care
Steel handles the shower and the sea. Rinse with clean water after salt water or the pool, and check the bail from time to time. Perfume and chlorine wear plating over time.
FAQ
Can I put any pendant on a curb chain?
Yes, as long as the bail fits over the chain and the clasp.
What length curb chain is best for a cross?
22" to 24", so the cross rests on the upper chest.
Can I return the chain if it does not fit my pendant?
Yes, within 30 days. Every chain is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects.
