Layering a gold Cuban link chain: pairs that work
A gold-tone Cuban link chain is often the first chain a man layers, because its flat, tight links give a strong base line on the chest. Two Cubans together, or a Cuban with a finer chain, can look planned or look messy, and the difference comes down to length gaps and width contrast. This page is about stacking gold Cuban chains. Every chain here is stainless steel or titanium steel with a gold-tone plating; gold is the color, not the metal, and the stones on some pieces are cubic zirconia. To choose a single chain by width, see our gold Cuban link chain width guide.
Three rules for stacking Cubans
- Leave about 2 inches between lengths. 20" with 22" or 24" is the classic gap. Closer and the chains sit on top of each other.
- Change the width. Put the thinner chain on top, the wider one lower. Two identical widths read as one blurred band.
- One shiny piece at most. A chain set with cubic zirconia on every link is worn alone.
Gold Cuban pairs, with real sizes
| Top chain | Bottom chain | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 4 mm Cuban Link Chain Necklace, 20" | 8 mm Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain, 24" | The classic stack: fine over bold |
| 4 mm Cuban Link Chain Necklace, 18" | 6 mm Cuban Link Chain Necklace, 22" | Same model, two widths, discreet |
| 6 mm Cuban Link Chain Necklace, 20" | 10 mm Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain, 26" | Strong, for over a t-shirt |
| Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp, 20" | 8 mm Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain, 24" | Plain links in gold-tone, stones only at the clasp |
The Cuban Link Chain Necklace comes in 4, 6 and 8 mm, from 18" to 24". The Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain goes from 8 to 18 mm and 18" to 30", though not every width exists in every length: the product page shows each combination.
Mixing a Cuban with another link
A Cuban also pairs well with a round chain, such as a rope or wheat link, because flat and round contrast clearly. Keep both gold-tone so the shades match. For mixed-link pairs across our whole gold-tone range, see how to layer gold link necklaces.
Wearing and caring for a stack
Put the chains on from the shortest to the longest, and take them off in the same order to avoid knots. Store them apart. You can keep them on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool; rinse them in clean water after the sea or the pool. Two chains rub against each other, so the gold-tone plating wears faster where they touch, and perfume and chlorine wear it over time too.
Layered gold Cuban FAQ
How many gold Cuban chains can I wear at once?
Two is the safe number. A third works only if all three are thin.
Should the wider chain be on top or at the bottom?
At the bottom, on the longer length. The wider chain then anchors the stack.
Can I layer the Cuban with cubic zirconia on every link?
We advise against it. It is made to be seen alone, with no second chain.
What if the pair does not work on me?
You can return a chain within 30 days, and each one has a 1-year warranty against defects.
