Gold link necklaces for men: how to layer two of them
This collection mixes plain gold-tone link chains with gold-tone pendant necklaces, which makes it the right place to plan a layered look: two necklaces worn together, one plain and one with a pendant, or two plain links of different widths. Every piece is stainless steel or titanium steel with a gold-tone plating. If you only want one chain, start with our gold-tone chains page instead.
The three rules of layering
- Leave about 2 inches between lengths. 20" with 22" or 24" is the classic pair. Closer than that and the chains tangle; further and they stop reading as a set.
- Change the width or the texture. A thin, smooth chain next to a wider, textured one. Two identical chains just look like a mistake.
- One pendant at most. The pendant goes on the longer chain, so it hangs below the plain one.
Gold-tone pairs that work
| Shorter necklace | Longer necklace | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mm box chain, 20" | Cross or medallion pendant, about 24" (60 cm) | Fine line plus focal point |
| 4 mm Cuban, 20" | 3 mm wheat chain, 24" | Flat and round together |
| O-link chain, 16" | 4 or 5 mm Figaro, 20" | High and low, two patterns |
| 3 mm flat snake, 18" | 2.3 mm rope, 20" or 24" | Smooth plus twisted, both fine |
Pieces built for layering
- The 1.5 mm Box Chain Necklace (gold-tone in 18" or 20") is the easiest top layer: thin enough to sit with anything.
- The O-Link Chain Necklace is a single 16" length that sits high, like a choker, and leaves the chest free for a second chain.
- The 3 mm Wheat Link Chain in 24" or 28" makes a round, textured lower layer.
- Most of our pendants come on chains of about 50 to 60 cm (20" to 24"), so they pair naturally with a 16" to 20" plain chain. Compare them in gold pendant chains.
Layering and everyday life
Layered chains can rub together, which wears gold-tone plating a little faster at the contact points. Take them off one at a time and store them apart so they do not knot. Shower, sea and pool are fine; rinse both chains in fresh water after salt water or chlorine and dry them.
FAQ
How do I stop layered necklaces from tangling?
Keep at least 2 inches between lengths and mix a heavier chain with a lighter one; the heavier one stays put.
Can I layer a gold-tone and a silver-tone necklace?
Yes, if it looks deliberate: repeat both tones elsewhere, for example a two-tone watch or bracelet.
Are these necklaces gold?
No. They are steel with gold-tone plating.
Can I return one if the pair does not work?
Yes, within 30 days. Shipping is free over $60.
