Men's 24 inch chains: a mid-chest drop made for pendants
A 24" chain falls toward mid-chest on an average neck. It is the length where a chain stops sitting at the neckline and starts hanging over your shirt. That makes it the natural choice for a pendant worn over a T-shirt, and the long layer in a stack.
Every chain in this collection comes in a 24" option. Several pendants come on a fixed 60 cm (about 24") chain, like the Crucifix Pendant Necklace in Titanium Steel on a 3 mm box chain and the Titanium Steel Box Chain with Bar Pendant.
Who should choose 24 inches
- Pendant wearers. A medium or large pendant needs room. At 24" it sits on the chest instead of at the collar.
- Men with a larger neck or broad shoulders. 24" keeps the drape relaxed where a 20" might feel close.
- Layering. 24" is the long chain under an 18" or 20".
- Over-the-shirt style. If you want the chain seen over a tee or a knit, this is the length.
If you want your chain to show at the neckline rather than on the chest, see our 22 inch chains.
How to choose the width at 24 inches
A longer chain sits further from the face, so it can carry more width without looking heavy. Options available in 24":
- Fine, 1.2 to 3 mm: the box chains, the geometric link chain and the 2.3 mm gold-tone rope. The right base for a pendant.
- Medium, 3 to 6 mm: the Titanium Steel Wheat Chain (3 to 7.5 mm), the Figaro chains, the rope chains and the 4 or 6 mm Cuban. Visible over a T-shirt on their own.
- Bold, 8 mm and up: the heavy curb chain and the Cuban chains from 8 mm. At 24" they hang with weight on the chest.
For a pendant, a 2 to 4 mm chain keeps the focus on the pendant. Without one, 5 mm and up is where a 24" chain looks complete.
Pendants on a 24 inch chain
At this length the pendant can be larger. A cross, a medal or a bar pendant sits a few inches below the collarbone and stays visible over a tee. Make sure the bail of the pendant is wider than the chain, and match the tone: bare steel with bare steel, gold-tone with gold-tone. You will find the full range in our chain pendants.
Going longer than 24 inches
Some chains also come longer: the heavy curb chain and the two Titanium Steel Wheat Chains go up to 30", and the gold-tone rope and the geometric link chain go up to 31". Those lengths fall low on the chest and suit a large pendant or a bold layered look.
Caring for a steel chain
Our chains are stainless steel or titanium steel, in bare steel (silver-tone), gold-tone plating or black plating depending on the model. A longer chain tangles more easily, so hang it or lay it straight when you take it off. Wipe it with a soft cloth, wash it with warm water and mild soap when needed, and dry it fully. Keep plated chains away from bleach and harsh cleaners.
24 inch chain FAQ
Is 24 inches too long for a man?
No. 24" is a common men's length, especially with a pendant. It falls toward mid-chest on an average neck.
Where does a 24 inch chain hang?
On an average neck, a few inches below the collarbone, toward mid-chest. On a larger neck it sits a little higher.
Can I wear a 24 inch chain to work?
Yes. Under a buttoned shirt a 24" chain stays hidden, so it is easy to wear at the office and show later with an open collar.
22 or 24 inches for a pendant?
22" for a small or medium pendant near the neckline. 24" for a medium or large pendant you want over a T-shirt.
Can I return the chain if it is too long?
Yes, you have 30-day returns to try it at home, and every chain comes with a 1-year warranty against defects.
