How to wear a gold cross chain necklace

A cross is often worn every day for years, from the office to the weekend. So the useful question is not only which cross, but how it will look with what you actually wear. This page is a styling guide for our gold-tone cross necklaces: under or over the shirt, with a suit, with other chains, and with the rest of your jewelry. Every cross and chain here is stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating, sold together and ready to wear.

Under the shirt or over it?

Both are right; it depends on whether the cross is private or visible.

• Under a buttoned shirt: choose a flat cross on a fine chain so it does not show through the fabric. The Slim Cross (4.4 x 2.5 cm) or the 30 mm Minimalist Cross work well.
• In an open collar: a 50 cm chain places the cross right in the opening. The Hollow Double Cross is on 50 cm.
• Over a T-shirt or a knit: a larger cross on 60 cm lies flat on the chest. The Textured Cross and the Lord's Prayer Cross are on 60 cm.

Wearing a cross with other chains

A gold cross can be layered with one plain gold-tone chain. Two rules keep it clean. First, leave about 2 inches (5 cm) between the two lengths, for example a 20" plain chain with a cross on 24", so they do not tangle. Second, keep the plain chain thin, 3 to 4 mm, so the cross stays the focus. A wide Cuban next to a cross competes with it. Our gold-tone chains have thin options in 20".

The Byzantine chain with crucifix is the exception: the chain is already a statement, so wear it alone.

Matching the rest

Daily care

Shower, gym, sea and pool are fine. Rinse the cross in fresh water after salt or chlorine and dry it. Spray perfume before you put it on, since it wears the plating gradually.
