Your first men's chain: four safe choices
If you have never worn a chain, the choice can feel endless: dozens of links, widths and lengths. The good news is that a first chain does not need to be bold or rare. It needs to be easy to wear every day, with a t-shirt and with a shirt. This page narrows our plain chains down to four safe starting points.
All our chains are made of stainless steel or titanium steel. Silver-tone is the bare polished steel; gold-tone is a plating over steel.
Four chains to start with
| Chain | Suggested first size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cuban Link Chain Necklace | 4 mm, 20" or 22" | Flat links, the most popular men's chain |
| Rope Chain Necklace | 3 mm, 20" or 22" | Twisted links that catch the light |
| Figaro Link Chain Necklace | 4 mm, 20" or 22" | A classic pattern of long and short links |
| Stainless Steel Box Chain | 2 mm, 20" or 22" | Square links, the quietest choice |
The everyday all-rounder
The Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 4 mm is present under an open collar and quiet with a shirt. It comes in silver-tone, gold-tone or black, from 18" to 24".
For a bit more shine
The Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel comes in 3, 4 or 5 mm and 20" to 26". The Figaro Link Chain Necklace comes in 3 to 6 mm and 16" to 26", in silver-tone or gold-tone.
For the most discreet look
The Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace goes from 1.2 mm to 3 mm. At 2 mm it is a fine line on the neck that never looks like too much, and it can later take a pendant.
The two numbers that matter
Width: for a first chain, 3 to 4 mm. Under 3 mm it can look thin on a man's neck; above 6 mm it becomes a statement. Length: 20" sits at the collarbone, 22" just below. Between the two, take 22" if you have a thicker neck or a broad build.

Care
Shower, sea and pool are fine; rinse in clean water after salt water or chlorine and dry. Perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone plating over time. 1-year warranty against defects, 30-day returns, free shipping over $60.
FAQ
What is the best first chain for a man?
A 4 mm Cuban or rope chain in 20" or 22". Both are easy to wear every day.
Silver-tone or gold-tone for a first chain?
Silver-tone is the easiest to match with a steel watch and with most clothes. Gold-tone suits warmer skin tones and gold-tone watches.
Can I wear my chain every day?
Yes. Steel is made for daily wear, including the shower. Take it off to sleep so it does not tangle.
