Men's stainless steel jewelry: your first three pieces
This page gathers our chains, pendant necklaces and bracelets in one place, all in stainless steel or titanium steel. With this many pieces, the easiest way in is to build in order. Most men end up wearing three things: a chain, a bracelet, and sometimes a pendant. Here is how to choose each one so they work together from the start.
Piece 1: an everyday chain
Start with a plain chain you can wear with anything. Aim for 3 to 4 mm and 20" (collarbone) or 22" (just below). Good first chains:
- the Figaro link chain, 3 to 6 mm, 16" to 26";
- the rope chain in stainless steel, 3 to 5 mm, 20" to 26";
- the Cuban link chain necklace in 4 mm, 18" to 24".
Pick the tone that matches your watch: bare steel for a steel watch, gold-tone for a gold-tone case.
Piece 2: a bracelet
Add a bracelet in the same tone, ideally in the same link family as the chain. Next to a watch, keep it 3 to 6 mm; on the free wrist, it can be wider. Measure your wrist and add 0.5 to 1 inch. The Cuban link bracelet in stainless steel (4 to 9 mm, 7" to 9") pairs with most chains.
Piece 3: a pendant, if it means something
A pendant is the most personal piece, so it comes last. A cross, a saint medallion or a compass, on its own chain. Choose 30 to 45 mm high for everyday wear. All pendants are on the chain pendants page.
How the three fit together
| Stage | What you wear | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Chain only | 3 to 4 mm, 20" or 22" |
| Next | Chain + bracelet | Same tone, bracelet same width or a little wider |
| Full | Chain + pendant + bracelet | One focal point; keep 2" between chain and pendant |
If you want to go further later, layering and wider chains are covered on our chain styles page.
Why steel for all three
Because you can leave it on. Stainless steel and titanium steel, a stainless steel alloy, go in the shower, the gym, the sea and the pool. Rinse with clean water after the sea or the pool. On gold-tone and black finishes, perfume and chlorine wear the plating over time.
