Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel
Find your necklace length
Where a chain sits depends on its length. Here is how each length falls on an average build.
Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 22".
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 2" more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 3.4" long: count how many fit along your strip.
| Length | Where it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 18" | Base of the neck | Choker look · layering base |
| 20" | On the collarbone | Classic · everyday |
| 22" | Top of the chest | Versatile · with a pendant |
| 24" | Mid-chest | Statement · pendant-friendly |
Layering tip: pick two lengths 2–4" apart so each chain sits on its own.

Finding your fit
The 3mm width offers a subtle detail, while the 5mm has a more noticeable presence. A 20-inch chain sits at the collarbone, with the 24-inch option resting on the mid-chest.
The details
The rope chain's design comes from small links woven together into a twisted strand. This construction gives it a textured, spiraling look that feels substantial. As you move, the curved surfaces of the links catch and reflect light continuously from all directions.
Its distinct form works well on its own, sitting under an open shirt collar or over a simple crewneck. For a layered look, pair it with a finer, simpler chain to create a clear contrast in texture and size.
Specifications
How to wear it
20" (51 cm) sits at the collarbone, 22" (56 cm) on the upper chest, 24" (61 cm) at mid-chest and 26" (66 cm) lower. 3 mm is a subtle detail, 4 mm shows clearly, and 5 mm has a noticeable presence.
Wear it alone under an open shirt collar or over a plain crewneck. For a layered look, pair it with a finer, simpler chain about 2 inches (5 cm) shorter or longer, so the contrast in texture and size reads clearly.
Why this link
Small links woven into a twisted strand give the rope chain a rounded, solid profile, and its curved surfaces reflect light from every direction as you move. It is stainless steel, in natural silver tone or gold-tone plating, in three widths. It suits the man who wants a classic chain with more texture than a flat curb or box.
Living with steel
- Silver tone. This is bare steel. There is no plating to wear off. Shower, sea, gym: it can stay on. A soft cloth brings the shine back.
- Gold tone and black. A plated layer sits on the steel. Water is fine. Chlorine, perfume and constant friction wear it faster. Take it off for the pool, put your cologne on first, and it will last longer.
- What our warranty covers. Clasps that fail and links that break under normal wear, for one year. Normal surface wear isn't a defect, and we'd rather tell you now.

Questions
Is the stainless steel rope chain fine in the sea?
Yes, it can stay on in the shower, at the gym and in the sea, since stainless steel does not rust. On the gold version, chlorine and perfume wear the plating faster than water; the silver is bare steel with nothing to wear off.
Why does the stainless rope chain feel substantial for its width?
Its small links are woven into a tight twisted strand with a solid, rounded profile, so it looks and feels denser than a flat chain of the same width.
Which rope chain length shows at an open shirt collar?
The 20 inch. It sits at the collarbone, right where an open collar shows it, while the 24 inch rests on the mid-chest over a crewneck.
What should I layer with a 5mm rope chain?
A finer, simpler chain, so the contrast in texture and size is clear. Keep the lengths at least 5 cm (2 in) apart, for example 20 and 24 inches.
3mm vs 5mm rope chain: which one should I get?
3 mm if you want a subtle chain that shows at an open collar. 5 mm if you want it seen over a T-shirt. 4 mm sits between the two and suits most men for every day.
Rope chain vs cable chain: what is the difference?
A cable chain is a line of separate oval links, so it looks plain and simple. A rope chain twists its links into a spiral, so it looks rounder, denser and catches more light.
Is the 26 inch rope chain too long for a big guy?
No, it sits low on purpose. 26 inches (66 cm) falls toward the lower chest, and on a broad or athletic frame it reads like a shorter chain does on a slim one.
Which width should I pick for a pendant?
4 or 5 mm for a medium to large pendant, 3 mm for a small one. A heavier pendant needs a thicker chain to sit properly.
