Where a chain sits depends on its length. Here is how each length falls on an average build.
Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 22".
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 2" more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 3.4" long: count how many fit along your strip.

16" (41 cm) sits at the base of the neck, 18" (46 cm) just below the collarbone, 20" (51 cm) at the collarbone, 22" (56 cm) on the upper chest and 24" (61 cm) mid-chest; 26" (66 cm) drops lower. 3 and 4 mm stay discreet; 5 and 6 mm are seen.
Wear 3 or 4 mm under a linen shirt with two buttons open, with or without a watch. Keep 5 or 6 mm as your only piece. To layer, pair a 20" with a 22" or 24".
Living with steel
- Silver tone. This is bare steel. There is no plating to wear off. Shower, sea, gym: it can stay on. A soft cloth brings the shine back.
- Gold tone and black. A plated layer sits on the steel. Water is fine. Chlorine, perfume and constant friction wear it faster. Take it off for the pool, put your cologne on first, and it will last longer.

No. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium. Like other stainless steel, it does not rust and does not react with skin the way brass or copper can.

The silver. It is bare steel with no coating, so there is nothing to wear off. The gold version is gold-tone plating over the same steel: water is fine, but perfume and chlorine wear it faster.
