Curb link chain: why the flat curb link lasts

The curb link is one of the oldest chain designs, and still one of the most worn. The reason is practical: it is simple to make, hard to tangle and sturdy in daily use. This page explains how a curb link is built, what makes it durable in steel, and how to keep it looking good for years. For widths, lengths and styling, see the main curb chain necklaces collection.

How a curb link is built

  • Oval links: each link is a closed oval that passes through the next one.
  • Twisted flat: the links are twisted so they all lie in the same plane. That is why a curb chain sits flat instead of rolling.
  • Beveled faces: on many curb chains, the flat faces are cut at an angle. The facets reflect light and smooth the edges against the skin.
  • Cuban version: flatten the links further and set them tighter, and you get a Cuban curb.

Why it holds up

FeatureWhat it means for you
Flat, interlocked linksLess tangling than round or very fine chains
Wide contact between linksWear is spread out instead of concentrated at one point
Stainless steel or titanium steelDoes not rust, and handles water and sweat

Our curb link chains

The Heavy Curb Chain Necklace is the classic curb: closely set, beveled links in stainless steel, silver-tone or gold-tone, from 6 to 16 mm. For the tighter link, the Bold Cuban Link Chain in Titanium Steel is a 10 mm Cuban with beveled links, and the Silver Cuban Link Chain is polished silver-tone stainless steel from 6 to 16 mm. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium.

Caring for a steel curb chain

Water

Shower, sea and pool are fine. Rinse with clean water after salt water or chlorine, and dry the chain flat.

Cleaning

Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush between the links. Rinse and dry fully.

Plated finishes

On gold-tone and black, plating is a surface layer. Perfume, chlorine and abrasive cloths wear it over time, so put cologne on before the chain and dry it by patting.

Storage

Lay it flat or keep it in a pouch, apart from other jewelry.

FAQ

FAQ

Does a curb chain tangle?

Rarely. The flat, interlocked links resist knotting much better than thin round chains.

Will a steel curb chain turn my neck green?

No. Stainless steel and titanium steel do not turn skin green.

What if a link opens?

Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects. Contact us and we will handle it. More link styles are compared in our chain styles guide.
