A men's silver chain you can wear every day, in the shower and at the sea
Many men want a silver chain they never have to take off: in the shower, at the gym, on the beach, in the pool. That is exactly what silver-tone steel is good at. This page is about wearing a silver chain every day, and about the chains in this collection that suit that life best. For widths and lengths in general, see our main men's silver chains page.
Silver in color, steel in metal
Our silver chains are silver in color, not in metal. They are made of stainless steel, 316L stainless steel on the Franco chain, or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium). In silver-tone, most of them are bare polished steel with no plating, so there is no layer to wear off. Steel does not rust and does not turn the skin green, which is why it suits daily wear.
Water, sweat and salt: what to expect
| Situation | Can it stay on? | What to do after |
|---|---|---|
| Shower | Yes | Rinse off soap now and then |
| Gym | Yes | Wipe off sweat with a soft cloth |
| Sea | Yes | Rinse in clean water, then dry |
| Pool | Yes | Rinse in clean water, then dry |
| Cleaning products | Avoid | Take the chain off first |
On the few chains that also come in gold-tone or black, those platings are the more delicate part: perfume and chlorine wear them over time. Silver-tone bare steel does not have that problem.
The best silver chains for an active life
Simple links that are easy to rinse
Open, simple links dry quickly and hold little soap. The Polished Cable Link Chain Necklace (3 to 10 mm, 18" to 28") and the Figaro Link Chain Necklace (3 to 6 mm, 16" to 26") are good examples.
Strong links that do not kink
The Titanium Steel Wheat Chain has four woven strands that resist kinking, in 3 to 7.5 mm and 18" to 30". The Franco Link Chain Necklace in 316L stainless steel turns as you move without twisting.
Flat chains: a little more care
Flat snake and fine box chains can kink if folded hard. They handle water fine, but hang them or lay them flat when they are off.
A simple routine
- After the sea or the pool, rinse the chain in clean water and pat it dry.
- Once a week, wipe it with a soft cloth to bring back the shine.
- Store it apart from other jewelry so the polish does not scratch.
Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns.
Everyday silver chain FAQ
Can I swim with a silver-tone steel chain?
Yes, in the sea or the pool. Rinse it in clean water afterward.
Will it change color?
Bare steel does not rust and has no plating to wear off. If it looks dull, a soft cloth brings the shine back.
Can I shower with it every day?
Yes. Rinse off soap now and then, and rinse it in clean water after salt or chlorine.
Which silver chain should I wear every day?
A 3 to 4 mm wheat, cable or Figaro chain in 20" or 22".
