Cuban link chains: how they are built and how the clasp works
Before buying a Cuban link chain, most men look at width and length. Fewer look at what actually keeps it on: the link construction and the clasp. This page focuses on those details. For widths, lengths and styling, go to our main men's Cuban chains collection.
How a Cuban link is made
A Cuban link starts as an oval curb link. Each link is twisted so it lies flat, then flattened and set tightly against the next one. That is why a Cuban reads as a single band instead of separate links. On some models the flat faces are beveled, which adds sharp edges that reflect light, as on the 10 mm Bold Cuban Link Chain in Titanium Steel.
Our Cuban chains are made of stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium). The silver-tone models are bare polished steel; the gold-tone and black models are plated steel.

| Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain, 8 to 18 mm | Box clasp detailed with cubic zirconia |
| Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp | Box clasp fully set with cubic zirconia |
| Cuban Link Chain with Cubic Zirconia, 12 mm | Box clasp |
Why a box clasp on a wide Cuban
A box clasp is a flat tongue that slides into a matching box and clicks shut. It has the same width as the chain, so it disappears into the line of links instead of creating a narrow, weak point. A safety latch adds a second lock on the side.
How to fasten it
- Hold the chain in front of you, close it, then turn it around to the back.
- Push the tongue fully into the box until it clicks.
- Close the safety latch if your chain has one, and give it a light pull to check.
Keeping the links and clasp in shape
Steel can go in the shower, the sea and the pool. Rinse in clean water after salt water or chlorine, and dry the clasp so no water stays inside the box. Store a wide Cuban flat rather than hanging it by the clasp. Perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone and black plating over time.
FAQ
Can a box clasp open by itself?
When the tongue is pushed fully in, it stays shut. A safety latch, where fitted, adds a second lock.
What if a link or the clasp fails?
Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects. Contact us and we will sort it out.
Is titanium steel the same as titanium?
No. It is a stainless steel alloy. It is durable and does not rust, but it is not pure titanium.
