Your first men's necklace: a plain chain or a pendant?
Most men buying a first necklace hesitate between two things: a plain chain, worn on its own, or a necklace with a pendant. Both are here, around fifty steel necklaces in all. This page helps you make that first choice, then points you to the right place to narrow it down.
Every necklace is made of steel: stainless steel, 316L stainless steel on the Franco chain, or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium). Silver is bare polished steel; gold-tone and black are platings over steel.
Plain chain or pendant: how to decide
| Plain chain | Pendant necklace | |
|---|---|---|
| What people see | The link: rope, Cuban, Figaro, box | The pendant: cross, medallion, compass, bar |
| Message | Style, no particular meaning | Often personal: faith, a symbol, a gift |
| Usual length | 18" to 22" | About 20" to 24", so the pendant sits on the chest |
| Best if | You want something you never take off | You want one piece that says something |
Three easy first necklaces
A fine chain you can forget you are wearing
The Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel is 1.5 mm wide, in 18" to 24": a clean line at the collarbone that disappears under a buttoned shirt.
A chain with texture
The Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel in 3 mm and 20" is a classic first chain: visible over a t-shirt, quiet under a collar.
A simple pendant
The Titanium Steel Box Chain with Bar Pendant is a 40 x 5 mm polished bar on a 60 cm box chain: a pendant with no symbol to explain.
Where to go next
- For a plain chain, compare widths, lengths and links on our men's chains page.
- For a pendant, see every cross, medallion and symbol on our men's chain pendants page.
Living with a steel necklace
Steel is made for daily wear. You can keep your necklace on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool; just rinse it in clean water after the sea or the pool and let it dry. On gold-tone and black, perfume and chlorine wear the plating over time. Every necklace has a 1-year warranty against defects, 30-day returns, and free shipping over $60.
Men's necklace FAQ
What length necklace should a man wear?
20" sits at the collarbone on most men and is the safest first length. Take 22" or 24" for a pendant.
What are these necklaces made of?
They are stainless steel or titanium steel, silver-tone or with a gold-tone or black plating.
Will a steel necklace turn my skin green?
Stainless steel and titanium steel do not rust and do not turn the skin green.
Can I wear a chain and a pendant necklace together?
Yes. Keep about 2 inches between the two lengths, with the plain chain on top.
