Silver box chain with a pendant: the clean base for a cross or medallion
The box chain is the chain most often chosen to carry a pendant. Its square links sit tight, so the chain stays straight and the pendant hangs centered. In silver-tone steel, it stays discreet and lets the pendant lead. This page is about that use: silver-tone box chains, and the pendants we sell already on one. For the box chain itself, widths and lengths, see our main men's box chains page.
"Silver" here means the color. These chains are steel: stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium), in bare polished steel. Some pendants also come in gold-tone or black plating.
Two plain box chains for your own pendant
| Chain | Widths | Lengths |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace | 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.4, 3 mm | 16" to 28" |
| Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel | 1.5 mm | 18", 20", 22", 24" |
For a small pendant, 1.5 to 2 mm is enough. For a medallion or a larger cross, choose 2.4 or 3 mm on the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace, so the chain looks in proportion. The Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel is the fine 1.5 mm option. Check that your pendant's bail lets the chain pass through.
Pendants that come on a box chain
Faith pieces
The Lord's Prayer Cross Pendant Necklace (3 x 5 cm cross, 60 cm chain), the Hollow Double Cross (50 cm), the Cylindrical Cross (small 3 cm or large 4.5 cm, 60 cm chain), the Minimalist Cross (30, 43 or 53 mm) and the Saint Benedict Medallion (60 cm) all hang on a box chain.
Symbols and shapes
The Titanium Steel Box Chain with Bar Pendant (40 x 5 mm bar, 60 cm), the Square Pendant with black inlay, the antiqued Compass Pendant, the Dog Tag Cross (55 cm) and the Lion Head Medallion complete the set.
Most of these chains are about 60 cm (24 in), which places the pendant on the upper chest, visible over a t-shirt or in an open collar. For more crosses, see our men's cross pendant chains.
Care for a silver-tone box chain
Bare steel keeps its color: wipe it with a soft cloth to bring back the shine. You can wear it in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool; rinse it in clean water after the sea or the pool and dry it. Box chains do not like to be folded hard, so hang them or lay them flat.
