What is a Franco chain? The four-sided curb, explained
A Franco chain is a curb chain rebuilt with four faces instead of two. Each link is V-shaped and nested tightly into the next, so the finished chain has a square cross-section. Seen from any side, it shows the same pattern. That is the whole point of the Franco: it rolls as you move, never lands "wrong side up", and does not twist the way a flat chain can.
Our Franco Link Chain Necklace is made of 316L stainless steel. It comes in bare polished steel (silver-tone), with a gold-tone plating, or with a black plating, in 6, 9 or 13 mm widths and 22" to 30" lengths.
How a Franco chain is built
Most chains are a single row of links lying in one plane. The Franco is woven: the V-shaped links interlock in pairs, which closes the gaps and gives the chain a dense, solid feel. The result behaves almost like a flexible bar. It drapes in a straight line, holds its shape, and spreads the weight of a pendant evenly. That is why we consider it the strongest pendant base in our range.
Franco vs. other chain styles
| Chain | Profile | How it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Franco | Square, four-sided | Straight line, rolls without flipping |
| Cuban | Flat, twisted links | Lies flat, wide face shows |
| Box | Square, open cube links | Fine, clean line |
| Rope | Round, spiral | Textured, catches light |
If you want the flat, wide look, a Cuban link chain is closer to what you have in mind. If you want something finer with square links, see our box chains. The Franco sits in between: square like a box chain, substantial like a Cuban.
Who the Franco chain suits
The Franco is a good first "serious" chain. It reads as solid without being flashy, and because it looks the same from every angle, it stays neat on its own all day. At 6 mm it works with a t-shirt or an open shirt. At 9 or 13 mm it becomes the main piece of the outfit and joins our thick chains.
Franco chain FAQ
Why is it called a Franco chain?
The name is used in the jewelry trade for this four-sided, V-link curb construction. It describes one specific build: tight V-links with a square profile.
Is a Franco chain the same as a curb chain?
It is a variation of it. A classic curb chain has two flat faces. A Franco has four, which makes it rounder in the hand and more resistant to twisting.
Can I wear a Franco chain in the shower or at the beach?
Yes. Shower, gym, sea and pool are fine. Rinse it in clean water after the sea or the pool. Perfume and chlorine wear the gold-tone or black plating over time.
What does it come with?
A 1-year warranty against defects, 30-day returns, and free shipping on orders over $60.
