Men's snake chains: a smooth line of steel
A snake chain does not look like a chain made of links. Small plates sit so close together that the surface reads as one smooth strip of metal. It catches light evenly, lies close to the skin and stays quiet under a shirt.
Right now this collection holds one chain: the Flat Snake Chain Necklace. It is made of stainless steel, in bare steel (silver-tone) or with gold-tone plating. You choose the width (2, 3, 4 or 5 mm) and the length (16", 18", 20" or 24"). We would rather show you one snake chain we stand behind than fill the page.
Flat snake vs. round snake
A round snake chain is a tube. It looks the same from every angle and turns freely. A flat snake chain, the style we carry, is pressed into a ribbon. It lies flat on the collarbone and shows a wider face of metal, so it looks a little bolder than a round chain of the same width.
The trade-off: a flat chain can kink if it is folded hard or knotted in a bag. Treat it a little more gently than a curb or rope chain.
How to choose the width
- 2 mm: a fine line. Good with a linen shirt or a crew neck, and easy to wear every day.
- 3 mm: still discreet, but you notice it. A safe first snake chain.
- 4 mm: visible under an open collar. Reads as a chain you chose on purpose.
- 5 mm: the boldest option. Best worn on its own, over a T-shirt.
If you want something finer than 2 mm, look at our thin chains, which go down to a 1.2 mm box chain.
How to choose the length
On an average neck, 16" sits high and close, near the base of the neck. 18" sits just above the collarbone. 20" rests on the collarbone, the easiest length for most men. 24" falls toward mid-chest and works over a T-shirt or under an open shirt. If you are between two lengths, take the longer one: a snake chain that is too tight tends to twist.
What to wear it with
A snake chain is a clean, modern piece. It looks right with a plain white tee, a knit polo or an open button-down. Because the surface is smooth, it pairs well with a textured chain in a layered look: try a snake chain at 20" with a twisted rope at 24" from our rope chains. Keep both in the same tone, bare steel with bare steel or gold-tone with gold-tone.
If you like the smooth look but want a pendant already on it, the Mixed Chain with Four-Point Star Pendant starts with a snake section and ends in flat curb links.
Snake chain vs. box chain
Both are smooth and minimal. A box chain is made of tiny square links, so it is more flexible, less prone to kinking, and takes a pendant easily. A snake chain is sleeker and more fluid on the skin. If you plan to wear a pendant every day, see our box chains.
Caring for a steel snake chain
- Hang it or lay it flat when you take it off. Do not wind it tight or fold it.
- Wipe it with a soft cloth after wear. For a deeper clean, use warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry it fully.
- Keep it away from harsh chemicals such as bleach or strong cleaners. On the gold-tone version, less friction and fewer chemicals help the plating last.
- Store it apart from other jewelry so the smooth surface does not scratch.
Snake chain FAQ
What width snake chain should a man wear?
For everyday wear, 3 mm is the easy choice: visible but not loud. Go 2 mm if you want it almost hidden under a shirt, and 4 or 5 mm if the chain is the only thing you wear.
Can a kinked snake chain be fixed?
A light bend can often be eased back by rolling the chain gently between your fingers on a flat surface. A sharp crease usually leaves a mark. Avoiding hard folds is the best fix.
Can I put a pendant on a snake chain?
Yes, if the bail of the pendant is wider than the chain and the clasp fits through it. A light pendant is best, because a heavy one can pull a flat chain into a V shape.
Is a snake chain good for everyday wear?
Yes, as long as you take it off for rough tasks and store it flat. Stainless steel handles daily wear well; the main thing to avoid is kinking.
Can I return it if the size is wrong?
Yes. You have 30-day returns to check the width and length at home, and every chain comes with a 1-year warranty against defects.
