Thin gold-tone necklaces for men: how to layer them
Thin gold-colored necklaces are the easiest pieces to layer: two fine lines at different lengths look intentional, not crowded. This page is a layering guide using the necklaces in this collection. All are 316L stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy) with a gold-tone plating, and most also come in silver-tone. To browse thin gold-tone chains by width, see thin gold-tone chains; for every gold-tone chain, see our main gold chains page.
The three rules of layering two necklaces
- Two lengths, at least 2" apart. 18" and 22", or 20" and 24", so the chains do not sit on top of each other.
- One smooth, one textured. A smooth box or flat snake chain next to a rope or wheat chain keeps each line readable.
- The thinner one on top. Put the finer chain at the shorter length and the fuller one below.
Pairings that work
| Shorter chain | Longer chain | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Box chain, 1.5 mm, 18" | Rope chain, 3 mm, 22" | Clean line plus texture |
| Flat snake, 2 or 3 mm, 20" | Wheat chain, 3 mm, 24" | Smooth over braided |
| Figaro, 3 mm, 20" | Crucifix pendant necklace, 24" (60 cm) | Chain plus a pendant |
The box chain necklace in titanium steel comes in gold-tone in 18" or 20". The rope chain necklace comes in 3, 4 or 5 mm, from 20" to 26". The flat snake chain goes from 2 to 5 mm.
Adding a pendant to the stack
If one layer carries a pendant, put it on the longer chain so it hangs free. The crucifix pendant necklace in titanium steel comes on its own 3 mm, 60 cm (24") chain, with a 58 x 37 mm pendant, in gold-tone, silver-tone or black. Pair it with a plain 18" or 20" chain above it.
Keeping two gold-tone chains bright
Layered chains rub against each other, so store them apart. Put them on after perfume, rinse with clear water after the sea or the pool, and dry. Chlorine and perfume wear plating over time. The shower is fine.
Questions about thin gold-tone necklaces
How many necklaces can a man layer?
Two is the safe number. Three can work if all are thin and the lengths are well spaced.
Can I mix gold-tone and silver-tone?
You can, but one tone looks cleaner. If you mix, repeat both tones elsewhere, for example on a two-tone watch.
What if a length is wrong?
You have 30-day returns and a 1-year warranty against defects. Shipping is free over $60.
