Gold-tone plated Cuban link chain: how the plating works and how to make it last
If you are looking for a gold plated Cuban link chain, here is exactly what our gold-color Cubans are: stainless steel or titanium steel underneath, a gold-tone plating on top. This page explains what that means for you day to day, and how to keep the color looking good. To choose a width or a style, see men's Cuban link chains.
What is under the plating
| Chain | Steel underneath | Plating |
|---|---|---|
| Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain | Stainless steel | Gold-tone, polished |
| Cuban Link Chain Necklace | Stainless steel | Gold-tone (also silver-tone or black) |
| Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp | Titanium steel | Gold-tone (also natural steel) |
| Cuban Link Chain with Cubic Zirconia | Titanium steel | Gold-tone (also natural steel) |
Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium. Both bases do not rust, which is why the chain can stay on in water.
Where a Cuban chain shows wear first
Cuban links are twisted and flattened so they lie tight against each other. Friction is what wears a plating, so the first signs show where the chain rubs: the clasp, the inner faces of the links and the part that touches the collar. Check those spots when you look at the color.
What wears a gold-tone plating, and what to do
- Perfume and cologne: the main enemy. Spray first, let it dry, then put the chain on.
- Chlorine: pool water wears plating over time. Swimming is fine; rinse the chain in clean water afterwards.
- Salt water: the sea is fine too. Rinse and dry the chain after.
- Abrasives: no polishing cloths, toothpaste or jewelry dips. A soft, dry cloth is enough.
- Rubbing: store the chain on its own so other jewelry does not scratch it.
Shower and gym are fine. Pat the chain dry afterwards.
Plated or bare steel?
If you want zero upkeep, choose silver-tone: it is bare polished steel, with no plating to wear. Compare the colors on our gold-tone chains and silver-tone chains pages.
Gold-tone plated Cuban FAQ
Will a gold-tone plated Cuban chain change color?
With time and friction the gold-tone can soften, mostly at the clasp and the inner links. The steel underneath does not rust.
Can I shower with it?
Yes. Shower, gym, sea and pool are all fine. Rinse after the sea or the pool.
What is covered?
