Gold chain for a pendant: which chain carries which pendant
A pendant is only as good as the chain under it. Too thin, and a heavy medallion pulls the chain into a V and flips around. Too thick, and a small cross disappears. Every necklace on this page is sold with its pendant already on a gold-tone chain that fits it. Below, we show which chain each one uses, and which plain chain to choose if you already own a pendant. All chains and pendants are stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating; gold describes the color only.

Match the chain length to the pendant
- Small pendant (about 2 cm): keep it high. The Archangel medallion sits on a 40 cm chain with a 5 cm extender, at the base of the neck.
- Medium (4 to 5 cm): 50 to 55 cm, at or just below the collarbone. The Hollow Double Cross is on 50 cm.
- Large (5 to 6 cm): 60 cm, so it rests on the chest. The Crucifix Pendant Necklace (58 x 37 mm) comes on a 3 mm, 60 cm chain.
Already have a pendant? Choose a plain chain
Check the bail first: its opening must be wider than the chain. Then pick by weight. For a light pendant, a 3 mm wheat or figaro chain in 22" works well. For a heavy pendant, the Franco Link Chain is the strongest base we have: 6 mm wide, from 22" to 30", and it turns without twisting. A 4 mm Cuban in 22" is another good base. Avoid the 1.5 mm box chain for anything larger than a small charm. All plain chains are on our gold-tone chains page.

Care
The bail rubs the chain at one point, so that is where plating wears first. Wipe both with a soft cloth, rinse in fresh water after the sea or the pool, and dry before storing.
