A silver-tone chain that matches your watch and ring
Many men choose a chain last, after the watch and the wedding band are already on. If those are steel or another white metal, a gold-tone chain fights them and a silver-tone chain finishes the look. This page is about that match. Every chain here is stainless steel or titanium steel in a cool, silver tone; none is made of silver metal.
For the full guide to silver-tone widths and lengths, see our men's silver chains page.
Match the finish, not just the color
Steel comes in finishes, and so do watches. Matching the finish is what makes a chain look chosen rather than added.
| Your watch or ring | Chain finish that matches | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Polished steel case or bracelet | High-polish links that flash | Cuban link chain necklace, 4 to 8 mm |
| Brushed or sports steel | Textured links that soften the shine | Titanium steel wheat chain, 3 to 7.5 mm |
| Thin dress watch, plain band | A fine, smooth line | Stainless steel box chain, 1.2 to 3 mm |
| Large diver or chronograph | A wider chain to balance the case | Heavy curb chain, 6 to 16 mm |
Match the scale
A simple rule: the chain should look about as strong as your watch. A 38 mm dress watch sits well with a 2 to 3 mm chain. A 42 mm steel sports watch carries 4 to 6 mm. Above that, an 8 mm or wider chain is a statement of its own, and the watch becomes the quieter piece.
The ring matters less, but it settles the tone. A steel or white-metal band and a silver-tone chain read as one set.
Bare steel or plated silver tone
On most chains here, the silver tone is the steel itself, polished, with nothing on top. Two models, the Byzantine link chain necklace and the wheat link chain in titanium steel, carry a silver-tone plating, as their product pages state. Bare steel never shows a different color underneath; plating looks the same on day one and asks for a little more care with perfume and chlorine.
Water and daily wear
Shower, gym, sea and pool are fine. Rinse the chain with clean water after the sea or the pool and dry it. That is the same care your steel watch bracelet needs, which makes the pair easy to live with.
FAQ
Is a silver-tone chain made of silver?
No. It is stainless steel or titanium steel with a silver color, usually bare polished steel.
Can I wear a silver-tone chain with a gold-tone watch?
You can, but the look is cleaner when chain and watch share one tone. With a gold-tone watch, see our gold-tone chains.
Which width goes with a steel sports watch?
4 to 6 mm in most cases. Wider if the watch is large and you want the chain to lead.
What if it looks wrong next to my watch?
Return it within 30 days. Every piece has a 1-year warranty against defects, and shipping is free over $60.
