Men's link chains: choose the link for what you will do with it
Most guides sort link chains by looks. This one sorts them by job. A chain worn alone, a chain that carries a pendant and a chain that sits in a layer do not need the same link or the same width. Every chain on this page is sold without a pendant, in 316L stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium), in bare silver-tone or with a gold-tone or black plating. If you would rather compare the links by shape first, see our types of men's chains.
The right link for each job
| Job | Links that do it well | Width to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Worn alone | Cuban, curb, Franco, Byzantine, rope | 4 mm and up |
| Small pendant | Box, rope, wheat, cable | 1.2 to 3 mm |
| Heavy pendant | Franco, wheat | 6 mm and up |
| Bottom of a layer | Rope, Cuban, Figaro | 3 to 5 mm |
| Top of a layer | Box, geometric bar, flat snake | 1.2 to 3 mm |
Link chains, job by job
Worn alone
Flat links like Cuban and curb, and dense ones like Franco and Byzantine, have enough body to stand on their own from 4 mm. For a clean, rounded alternative, the Polished Cable Link Chain Necklace goes from 3 to 10 mm in 18" to 28".
Carrying a small pendant
A fine chain lets the pendant take the attention. The Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace comes from 1.2 to 3 mm and from 16" to 28"; at 1.2 or 1.5 mm it is made for a small pendant. Check that the pendant's bail fits the chain.
Carrying a heavy pendant
A large medallion needs a strong, dense chain, or it looks fragile and twists. The Titanium Steel Wheat Chain is woven tight, from 3 to 7.5 mm, and makes a reliable base for a larger pendant. The Franco chain, from 6 mm, is the strongest base we have for a heavy one.
In a layer
Combine two different textures and leave about 2" between the lengths. A fine, flat chain on top over a textured chain below is the easiest pairing. The Geometric Link Chain, in 2, 3 or 4 mm and up to 31", works well in either position.
Width and length in two lines
3 mm is the safe everyday width; go wider if the chain is your only piece. 20" rests at the collarbone on most men, 24" at mid-chest, which is where pendants usually look best.
Care
You can wear a steel link chain in the shower, at the sea or in the pool. Rinse it in clean water after salt water or chlorine and dry it. Store chains apart so they do not tangle. Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns.
Link chain FAQ
Which link chain is the strongest?
Among ours, the Franco chain is the strongest base for a heavy pendant. Dense woven links like wheat and Byzantine are also robust.
Can I put my own pendant on these chains?
Yes. Choose a fine box, rope, wheat or cable chain and check that the pendant's bail opening fits the width.
What link chain is best for layering?
Pair two different links, a fine flat one above a textured one, about 2" apart.
