Thin silver-tone chains for men: fine bare steel you can forget you are wearing

A thin silver-colored chain is one of the easiest pieces of jewelry to look after. "Silver" here is the color: every chain is 316L stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy), polished to a silver tone. On bare steel there is no plating, so a fine chain that rubs against collars all day keeps its color. This page lists the silver-tone chains offered at 3 mm or less. For all silver-tone chains, see our main silver-tone chains page; for fine chains in both colors, see thin chains.

Five widths of one box chain

If you are unsure how thin to go, the stainless steel box chain necklace is the easiest test: the same square link in five widths, from 1.2 mm to 3 mm, and seven lengths. At 1.2 or 1.5 mm it is almost invisible from a distance; at 3 mm it reads clearly on its own. It takes a pendant well at every width. Our box chains page compares box chains in more detail.

Care

Shower, gym, sea and pool are fine. Rinse with clear water after salt water or chlorine and dry. Warm water and a drop of mild soap remove skin oils from fine links; a soft cloth brings back the polish.

FAQ

Questions about thin silver-tone chains

Is a silver-tone chain made of silver?

No. It is stainless steel or titanium steel with a polished silver tone.

Will a thin steel chain tarnish?

Bare steel keeps its color in normal wear. If it dulls, warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth bring back the shine.

What is the best first thin silver-tone chain?

A 2 mm box chain in 20" is a safe first choice: visible, discreet and pendant-ready.

What is covered?
