Cuban chain necklaces: worn alone, with a pendant, or layered
A Cuban chain necklace is usually bought as the main piece. But plenty of men want to know what else it can do: carry a pendant, sit under a second chain, or share space with a cross. This page covers those three uses. To compare every Cuban model by width and length, go to our main men's Cuban chains collection.
All the necklaces here are stainless steel or titanium steel, in bare silver-tone steel or with gold-tone or black plating.
Worn alone: the default
From 8 mm, a Cuban necklace needs nothing else. The flat, tight links already catch the light. The Bold Cuban Link Chain in Titanium Steel (10 mm) and the Cuban Link Chain with Cubic Zirconia (12 mm, stones in every link) are made for this. Adding a pendant to them only competes with the chain.
With a pendant
A Cuban can carry a pendant, but the flat links do not let it slide freely. What works:
- Keep the chain narrow: 4 mm, at most 6 mm. The Cuban Link Chain Necklace comes in 4, 6 and 8 mm.
- Add length: 22" leaves room for the pendant to sit on the upper chest instead of at the collarbone.
- Check the bail: the opening at the top of the pendant must fit over the chain.
If the pendant is the main focus, a thinner box or rope chain does the job better. See our chains for pendants.
Layered with a second chain
| Top chain | Bottom chain | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| 4 mm Cuban, 20" | Pendant chain, 24" | About 4" |
| 6 mm Cuban, 20" | Thin rope or box chain, 22" | About 2" |
| 4 mm Cuban, 18" | 6 to 8 mm Cuban, 22" | About 4" |
Keep both chains the same tone. Avoid stacking two wide Cubans: they knock against each other and look heavy.
Caring for a Cuban necklace
Showers, the sea and the pool are fine in steel. Rinse in clean water after salt water or chlorine and pat dry. Perfume and chlorine slowly wear gold-tone and black plating, so spray cologne first and let it dry before putting the chain on.
FAQ
Can you put a pendant on a Cuban link necklace?
Yes, on a narrow one. 4 or 6 mm in 22" works best. Wider Cubans are meant to be worn without a pendant.
What length Cuban necklace for layering?
18" or 20" for the top chain, then 2 to 4 inches longer for the second one.
Which Cuban necklaces have stones?
The 12 mm Cuban Link Chain with Cubic Zirconia has stones in every link. The Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp has them on the clasp, and on the links too in silver-tone. The Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain keeps plain links, with a box clasp detailed with cubic zirconia. All the stones are cubic zirconia set in steel.
