Miami Cuban link chains: choosing the finish and the clasp
Once you know you want a Cuban chain, two details make the difference: the color of the steel and the clasp that holds it. This page compares the finishes and clasps across our six Cuban link chains. To choose the width first, go to our main men's Cuban link chains.
Silver-tone, gold-tone or black
Every chain here is steel, either stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium). The color comes from the finish.
- Silver-tone is bare polished steel. There is no plating to wear off, so it keeps its color; a soft cloth brings back the shine. The Silver Cuban Link Chain and the Bold Cuban Link Chain in Titanium Steel are silver-tone only.
- Gold-tone is a gold-color plating over steel: warm, bright, the classic Miami look. The Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain goes from 8 to 18 mm.
- Black is a black plating over steel, available on the Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 4, 6 and 8 mm. For more dark pieces, see our men's black chains.
The clasps
| Chain | Clasp and detail |
|---|---|
| Silver Cuban Link Chain | Box clasp with safety latch |
| Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain | Box clasp set with rows of cubic zirconia |
| Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp | Box clasp fully set with cubic zirconia; on silver, the links are set too |
| Cuban Link Chain with Cubic Zirconia | Every link set with cubic zirconia |
A box clasp is the usual closure on a wide Cuban: it slides into the last link and locks, so the chain looks continuous all the way around.
Plain or set with stones?
A plain polished Cuban works with everything, from a t-shirt to an open shirt. The cubic zirconia versions add sparkle and are more of an evening or statement piece. A good rule: one shiny piece at a time. If your chain is set with stones, keep your bracelet plain.
Keeping the finish
You can keep these chains on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool. Rinse in clean water after the sea or the pool, and dry the clasp. Perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone and black plating over time, so spray perfume before you put the chain on. Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns.
Finish and clasp FAQ
Will the gold-tone Cuban fade?
The plating wears slowly with friction, perfume and chlorine. Rinsing after the pool and storing it dry keeps it bright longer.
Which finish keeps its color best?
Silver-tone, because it is bare polished steel with no plating on top.
What are the stones?
They are cubic zirconia.
Is a box clasp secure?
Yes. On the silver Cuban it also has a safety latch, a second lock that keeps the clasp closed.
