Men's gold-plated chains: which links keep their look longest
Gold plating is a surface layer on steel, so it wears gradually wherever the chain rubs: at the clasp, at the back of the neck, on the links that touch a collar. This is a tendency, not a rule. Habits matter more than the link: a smooth chain worn with care can look better after a year than a textured one worn under perfume every day.
Where you wear it changes the answer
A chain worn under a shirt rubs against fabric all day, mostly at the back of the neck and the collar.
