Men's chains in stainless steel and titanium steel
This is every chain we sell for men, in one place. Each one is made of stainless steel or titanium steel, a stainless steel alloy (it is not pure titanium). You choose three things: the link, the width and the length. The finish comes last: bare steel in a silver tone, gold-tone plating, or black plating on a few models.
If you already know the look you want, the shortest path is a filter. If you don't, the guide below takes two minutes and saves a return.
Step 1: pick a width
Width does more to the look than anything else. The same chain reads as a quiet detail at 3 mm and as a statement at 10 mm.
- 1.2 to 2.4 mm: a fine line. Made to carry a small pendant or to sit under a buttoned shirt. Our box chains go down to 1.2 mm.
- 3 to 4 mm: the everyday range. Visible at an open collar, discreet in an office. Most of our rope, figaro and wheat chains live here.
- 5 to 8 mm: clearly seen over a T-shirt. Usually worn alone or with one finer chain.
- 9 mm and up: bold. Our heavy curb chain goes up to 16 mm and our gold-tone Cuban chain up to 18 mm. Wear these on their own.
Want a short list by size? See our thin chains and our thick chains.
Step 2: pick a length
On an average neck, this is where each length falls:
- 16": base of the neck, close like a choker.
- 18": just above or on the collarbone.
- 20": at the collarbone. The safest first chain.
- 22": just below the collarbone, with room for a pendant.
- 24": mid-chest, over a T-shirt.
- 26" to 31": low on the chest, for a long, loose look or a large pendant.
If your neck is larger, everything sits about one size higher, so go up 2 inches. Each length has its own page with the chains that come in it, from 20 inch chains to 24 inch.
Step 3: pick a link
The link sets the personality. Cuban and curb links lie flat and look dense. Rope and wheat chains are round and catch the light in a spiral. Figaro breaks the rhythm with one long link after three short ones. Box and snake chains are clean and geometric. We compare all of them side by side on our chain styles page, so you can choose by look rather than by name.
Step 4: pick a finish
Silver-tone chains are mostly bare polished steel, with no plating to wear off. Gold-tone and black chains are steel with a plated surface. Plating looks right from day one, but it is a surface layer: friction, perfume and chlorine wear it down over time. If you want the lowest-maintenance chain, choose bare steel. If you want warmth, browse the gold-tone chains.
How to care for a steel chain
- Rinse it in clean water after the pool or the sea, then dry it with a soft cloth.
- Put perfume and cologne on first, then the chain.
- Store flat chains such as the snake chain laid out or hung, never folded hard.
- For gold-tone and black pieces, skip abrasive cloths and polishing pastes.
FAQ
What chain length should a man wear?
20 inches is the most common choice. It rests at the collarbone on most men and works alone or with a small pendant. Go 22 or 24 inches if you want the chain to sit on the chest over a T-shirt.
What width is best for an everyday men's chain?
3 to 4 mm. It is visible without being loud, and it fits under a shirt collar. Go 5 to 6 mm if the chain is the only thing you wear.
Is titanium steel the same as titanium?
No. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy. It is strong and polishes well, but it is not pure titanium, and we list it as titanium steel on every product.
Are your gold chains made of gold?
No. Our gold chains are stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating. We say gold-tone on every page so there is no confusion.
Can I wear a chain with a pendant?
Yes. Pick a chain at least 3 mm wide and 22 inches long so the pendant sits on the chest instead of the collarbone. Our chain pendants page shows pendants already paired with a chain.
How do I measure a chain's thickness?
Measure the width of one link from edge to edge with a ruler or calipers, in millimetres; that is the number shops list. You do not need to guess on our pieces: every product page states the width, like the Figaro Link Chain Necklace (3, 4, 5 or 6 mm). Compare widths across all our men's chains.
Men's necklace that goes with everything?
A plain 4 mm chain at 20 inches, in silver-tone steel: it works with a T-shirt, an open shirt and a sweater. Our pick is the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm); the Figaro Link Chain Necklace (4 mm) is a slightly more distinctive alternative. See all men's chains.
What kinds of necklaces do men wear?
Three families: a plain chain (Cuban, Figaro, rope, box), a chain with a pendant (cross, medal, compass, bar), and a layered pair of two chains. Start with a plain chain if unsure: the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm). For a pendant: the Navigational Compass Pendant Necklace. See all chains and pendants.
Men's chains: which link should I start with?
Start with a Cuban: flat, classic, goes with everything. Then a Figaro or a rope for variety. The Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm), the Figaro Link Chain Necklace or the Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel. See men's chains.
Is a 4mm chain thick for a man?
No, 4 mm is a medium width: clearly visible under an open collar, but not loud. It is the width we suggest first. Good options are the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm), the Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel (4 mm) and the Figaro Link Chain Necklace (4 mm). All three are steel, so they can stay on in the shower.
How thick does a 6mm chain look on a guy?
A 6 mm chain reads clearly over a T-shirt from across a room, without being a statement piece. Over a plain tee, the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (6 mm) is a classic choice; the Franco Link Chain Necklace (6 mm) has a square, four-sided profile that turns without twisting. Both come in silver-tone steel, gold-tone or black.
Is a 2mm chain too thin for a man?
Not at all: 2 mm reads as a fine line, a discreet everyday chain that looks right with a linen shirt open at the neck. It is also the classic short chain when you layer two. Try the Flat Snake Chain Necklace (2 mm) or the Geometric Link Chain in Stainless Steel (2 mm). If you want it seen over a T-shirt, go to 4 mm instead.
How thick is a 3mm chain in real life?
Noticeable up close, discreet from a distance. A 3 mm chain is the classic rope width and an easy everyday size. Examples: the Braided Titanium Steel Chain (3 mm rope, bare steel) and the Figaro Link Chain Necklace (3 mm). Both can carry a small pendant.
