The silver king chain: what it is and which one to choose

"King chain" is the name many men use for the Byzantine chain: pairs of small rings folded through each other into a dense, rounded rope of links. It looks intricate, catches light from every side, and still moves freely. In German it is the Königskette. Our three king chains are silver-tone steel, stainless steel or titanium steel; silver is the color, not the metal.

Choosing your king chain

The elegant one: 4 mm

The Byzantine chain in stainless steel in 4 mm is the refined choice under an open collar. The texture shows up close without making noise from afar. In 5 mm, it is clearly there.

The real king chain: 8 mm

At 8 mm, a Byzantine is worn on its own and nothing else. Both the stainless steel version and the Byzantine link chain necklace come in 8 mm and 22". The first is bare steel; the second has a silver-tone plating and has a matching 8 mm bracelet.

With a crucifix

The Byzantine chain with crucifix pendant pairs the king chain with a polished crucifix engraved with the Lord's Prayer in Spanish. It is the only one of the three you can get longer, up to 31".

Why the king chain stands apart

Most chains are flat (Cuban, Figaro) or twisted (rope). The Byzantine is three-dimensional: it has the same depth seen from the front or the side. That is what gives it its weight on the neck and its regal reputation. It also means it suits a plain outfit best, since it already carries a lot of detail.

For the full Byzantine range in every tone, see our men's Byzantine chains, and for other heavy links, men's thick chains.

Care

Dense links can hold water and soap, so dry a Byzantine well after the shower. It is fine in the sea and the pool; rinse it in clean water afterwards. On the plated version, perfume and chlorine wear the plating over time.
