Silver-tone box chain with a pendant
A box chain is made of tiny square links, so it reads as one smooth line and does not twist under weight. That is why most of our pendant necklaces hang from one. This page gathers them: crosses, medallions and bars that come already on a silver-tone box chain, plus the two plain box chains if you want to add your own pendant. All are stainless steel or titanium steel; the silver is the tone, not the metal.
For plain box chains only, with every width and length explained, go to men's box chains.
Pendants on a box chain, by size
| Pendant | Pendant size | Chain length |
|---|---|---|
| Saint Benedict medallion | 24.5 mm round | 60 cm (24") |
| Minimalist cross | 30, 43 or 53 mm high | Round box chain |
| Cylindrical cross | 3 or 4.5 cm high | 60 cm (23.6") |
| Lord's Prayer cross | 3 x 5 cm | 60 cm (24") |
| Bar pendant | 40 x 5 mm, four-sided | 60 cm |
| Hollow double cross | 4.8 x 2.7 cm | 50 cm (20") |
| Lion head medallion | 40 x 55 mm, ringed with cubic zirconia | 60 cm (23.6") |
Also on a box chain: the dog tag cross (55 cm), the square pendant with black inlay (60 cm) and the antiqued compass pendant.
Choosing the pendant size
- Under 3 cm: discreet, fine under a shirt, right for every day.
- 3 to 5 cm: visible with an open collar, the usual size for a cross worn over a T-shirt.
- Over 5 cm: a statement. Wear it alone, without a second chain.
A 60 cm (about 24") chain puts the pendant mid-chest. A 50 cm chain lifts it just below the collarbone.
Adding your own pendant
The stainless steel box chain comes from 1.2 to 3 mm and 16" to 28". For a small pendant, 1.5 to 2 mm is enough; for a large cross, take 2.4 or 3 mm so the chain does not look too thin for the weight.
Care
Shower, gym, sea and pool are fine. Rinse with clean water after the sea or the pool and dry the pendant, where water collects around the bail. Perfume and chlorine wear a plated finish over time. Hang the necklace or lay it flat so the box links do not kink.
FAQ
Is a box chain strong enough for a pendant?
Yes. Its closed square links keep their shape under a pendant better than most fine chains.
Are these pendants silver?
No. They are stainless steel or titanium steel, silver-tone, some with gold-tone or black options.
Can I change the chain length?
Pendant necklaces come at the length shown. For another length, buy a plain box chain and move the pendant if its bail fits.
What if it sits too low?
Returns are accepted within 30 days, with a 1-year warranty against defects and free shipping over $60.
