Men's gold link chain: the width and length for your build
The same gold link chain looks different on different men. A 6 mm chain that looks bold on a slim neck can look modest on broad shoulders, and a 20" chain sits higher on a thick neck than on a thin one. This page matches width and length to your build. Every chain here is stainless steel or titanium steel with a gold-tone plating, not gold. For the full list of gold-tone links with every size, see gold-tone chains by link style.
Step 1: length from your neck size
Measure around the base of your neck with a soft tape measure. A chain about 4 inches longer than that number sits at the collarbone; add 2 to 4 inches more to bring it down onto the chest.
| Neck size | Sits at the collarbone | Lower on the chest |
|---|---|---|
| 14" to 15" | 18" to 20" | 22" to 24" |
| 15" to 16.5" | 20" | 22" to 24" |
| 16.5" to 18" | 22" | 24" to 26" |
| 18" and up | 24" | 26" to 30" |
Step 2: width from your frame
- Slim build: 2 to 4 mm stays in proportion. The 3 mm Figaro Chain (gold-tone 18" to 24") or the 3 mm Wheat Link Chain (20", 24" or 28").
- Average build: 4 to 6 mm, the classic range. The Cuban Link Chain Necklace in 4 or 6 mm, or the Rope Chain Necklace in 4 or 5 mm.
- Broad shoulders or a thick neck: 8 mm and up. The Heavy Curb Chain Necklace (gold-tone 6 to 12 mm), the 9 or 13 mm Franco Link Chain Necklace, or the Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain from 8 to 18 mm.
A thin chain is never wrong on a big frame; it simply reads as a discreet detail. A wide chain on a slim frame is the combination to think twice about.
Step 3: height and long chains
Tall men carry longer chains well: 24" to 28" drops to mid-chest without looking low. Only some gold-tone links go that long: the 2.3 mm Rope Chain in Gold-Tone Titanium Steel (up to 31"), the wheat chains (up to 28" and 30"), and the Franco, the Heavy Curb and the Gold-Tone Cuban (up to 30"). If you are shorter, 20" to 22" keeps the chain in proportion.
Care
Shower, gym, sea and pool are all fine. Rinse the chain in fresh water after salt water or chlorine and dry it. Perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone plating over time.
