Men's gold plated necklaces: a gold-tone layer over steel, and how to make it last
Every necklace on this page has a gold-tone plating over a steel base. The base is either 316L stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium). The plating gives the warm color; the steel underneath gives the strength. This page is about that plating: what it covers, what wears it down, and how to keep it bright. For a guide to choosing a gold-tone chain by width and length, see our men's gold chains.
Which base metal is under the plating?
The base matters because it is what you see if the plating ever thins at a contact point. Both bases are steel colored, so wear shows as a slightly paler spot, not as a dark mark.
| Necklace | Base | Gold-tone width | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Franco Link Chain | 316L stainless steel | 6, 9 or 13 mm | 22" to 30" |
| Figaro Link Chain | Titanium steel | 3 to 6 mm | 16" to 26" |
| Titanium Steel Wheat Chain | Titanium steel | 3 to 8 mm | 18" to 30" |
| Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain | Stainless steel | 8 to 18 mm | 18" to 30" |
| Box Chain in Titanium Steel | Titanium steel | 1.5 mm | 18" or 20" |
The same list also includes pendant necklaces with a gold-tone finish, such as the Lion Head Medallion Pendant Necklace. For the full choice of gold-tone pendants, browse our gold pendant chains.
What wears gold-tone plating, and what does not
What it handles
Water on its own is fine. You can keep a plated necklace on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool. After the sea or the pool, rinse it in clean water and dry it.
What slowly wears it
- Friction: the clasp and the links that rub on a collar wear first.
- Perfume, lotion and cleaning products: put them on before the necklace, not after.
- Chlorine: one swim is not a problem, but over time it dulls the plating.
A simple routine
Wipe the necklace with a soft, dry cloth after wearing it, and wash it now and then in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap. Avoid polishing cloths and abrasive pastes on plating: they remove it. Store it apart from other jewelry so harder links do not scratch it.
Plated or bare steel?
If you like the warm color, plating is the way to get it on steel. If you would rather never think about the finish, many of these models also come in bare, silver-tone steel, such as the Figaro Link Chain Necklace. A wide, gold-tone-only option is the Titanium Steel Wheat Chain Necklace, from 3 to 8 mm.
Every necklace has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns, and shipping is free on orders over $60.
Gold plated necklace FAQ
What is a gold plated necklace made of here?
Steel with a gold-tone plating. The color is on the surface; the structure is stainless steel or titanium steel.
How long does the gold-tone plating last?
It depends on how often you wear it and what it touches. Friction, perfume and chlorine are what wear it. Rinsing after the sea or the pool and wiping it dry helps it keep its color longer.
Can I shower with a gold plated necklace?
Yes. Steel handles the shower. Rinse off soap now and then and dry it, so residue does not dull the finish.
What do I see if the plating wears?
The base is stainless steel or titanium steel, which does not rust. If the plating thins at one spot, you see pale steel underneath.
