Big link chains for men: open links or dense links?
A "big link" chain can mean two very different things. Some chains have large, open links you can see through, others have wide links packed so tight they read as one band. Both are bold, but they do not look or feel the same. This page sorts our wide-link chains by link shape. They are all steel: 316L stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy), in silver-tone, gold-tone or black depending on the model. If you are mainly choosing by width, start with our thick chains guide.
Link shapes, compared
| Link | Shape | Widest we offer | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable | Round, open oval links | 10 mm | Airy, lighter for its width |
| Figaro | Three short links, one long | 6 mm | Open, rhythmic pattern |
| Curb | Twisted links, beveled edges | 16 mm | Dense, flexible band |
| Cuban | Curb links twisted and flattened | 18 mm | One flat, shiny surface |
| Franco | V-shaped links, four faces | 13 mm | Square, like a flexible bar |
| Byzantine | Rings folded through each other | 8 mm | Woven, rope-like |
| Wheat | Four strands of oval links | 8 mm (gold-tone) | Rounded and textured |
Open links: the visible pattern
Open links show the link itself. The polished cable link chain in titanium steel goes up to 10 mm with thick, rounded links, and the Figaro link chain goes to 6 mm. An open link has less steel for the same width, so it moves more and feels lighter on the neck.
Dense links: the band look
Dense links hide the gaps. The heavy curb chain and the Cuban chains are the best known; our Cuban chains page compares them all. The Franco is the most rigid of them, and the strongest base we have for a heavy pendant. The Byzantine is the most intricate up close.
Which one should you pick?
If you want the chain to look big without feeling heavy, choose open links. If you want the classic bold chain that catches the light in one line, choose a dense link.
Care
Big links collect skin oils. Rinse with warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry. After the sea or the pool, rinse with clear water. Plating on gold-tone and black models wears over time with perfume and chlorine.
Questions about big link chains
What is the chain with the biggest links?
In our range, the gold-tone Cuban link chain goes up to 18 mm wide, followed by the silver-tone Cuban and the heavy curb at 16 mm.
Are open links weaker?
Not in daily wear. They are simply less dense, so they weigh less for the same width.
What is covered?
Every chain has a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns. Shipping is free over $60.
