What makes a Cuban link chain: links, clasp and steel

Every Cuban link chain looks simple from a distance: a flat band of tight links. Up close, the differences are in how the links are cut, how the chain closes and what it is made of. This page explains how a Cuban link chain is built, so you know what you are looking at when you compare our six models.

The link: twisted, flattened, beveled

A Cuban link is a curb link that is twisted so each link lies flat against the next, then pressed so the chain lies flat on the skin. The tighter the links, the more the chain reads as one continuous band. Some chains are then beveled, with the edges of each link cut at an angle to catch the light. The Bold Cuban Link Chain in Titanium Steel is a good example: 10 mm wide, with beveled, faceted links.

A Cuban is a type of curb chain. A regular curb has more open, rounder links; a Cuban is tighter and flatter.

The clasp: why a box clasp

A wide Cuban chain needs a clasp that is as wide as the links. That is why our wider Cubans close with a box clasp, a rectangular piece that clicks into place. The Silver Cuban Link Chain, in silver-tone stainless steel, adds a safety latch. The Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain has a box clasp set with cubic zirconia, and on the Cuban Link Chain with Pave Clasp the clasp is fully set with cubic zirconia (and the links too, on the silver-tone version).

The steel: stainless or titanium steel

Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium. Both steels resist rust and handle daily wear. The silver color is the bare steel; the gold color is a plating.

Care

Tight links hold soap and sweat. Rinse the chain in clean water and dry it flat. Shower, sea and pool are fine; rinse after salt water or chlorine. Perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone plating over time. 1-year warranty against defects, 30-day returns, free shipping over $60.
