Men's gold curb chain: pairing the width with the length
The curb is the oldest flat link: each link is twisted so the chain lies flat against the chest. On a gold curb chain, the width you choose only looks right at certain lengths. That pairing is what this page is about. Every chain here is stainless steel or titanium steel with a gold-tone plating; the color is gold, the metal is steel. If you are still choosing between link styles, our gold-tone chains page compares them all.
The heavy gold-tone curb chain, size by size
Our Heavy Curb Chain Necklace is the curb in its most classic form: closely set, polished links. In gold-tone it comes in 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm, from 16" to 30". (The 16 mm is made in silver-tone steel only.)
| Gold-tone width | Lengths that work best | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 18" to 22" | Clearly a curb chain, still easy under a collar |
| 8 mm | 20" to 24" | Visible over a T-shirt, worn alone |
| 10 mm | 22" to 26" | A statement; needs room on the chest |
| 12 mm | 24" to 30" | The boldest gold-tone curb; lies low and flat |
The rule behind the table: the wider the chain, the longer it should be. A 12 mm curb at 18" sits tight around the neck and looks cramped; at 24" it lies flat.
Curb or Cuban?
A Cuban is a curb with tighter, rounder links. If you like the curb idea but want a smoother band, the Cuban Link Chain Necklace starts at 4 mm in gold-tone, and the Gold-Tone Cuban Link Chain goes from 8 to 18 mm. Both are in this collection. For everything Cuban, see Cuban link chains.
Can a gold curb chain hold a pendant?
Yes, a 6 mm curb carries a pendant well because its flat links do not twist. Keep the pendant in proportion: a cross like the one on our Classic Cross Pendant Necklace (6 x 3 cm, gold-tone) is about the right size. Wider curbs of 10 mm and up look best alone.
Care
A curb chain can stay on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool. Rinse it in fresh water after salt water or chlorine and pat it dry. Perfume and chlorine wear the gold-tone plating with time, so apply cologne first.
FAQ
What width gold curb chain should I get?
6 or 8 mm for a first curb chain. 10 and 12 mm are for men who want the chain to be the main piece.
What length for a thick curb chain?
22" or more from 10 mm upward, so the chain lies flat instead of standing up around the neck.
Is this chain made of gold?
No. It is stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating.
