Black and gold-tone chains for men: one chain, two finishes, or both together
"Black gold chain" can mean two things. Some men want a chain in black or in gold-tone and are deciding between the two. Others want to wear black and gold-tone together. This collection answers both: the two chains here are each made in a black finish and in a gold-tone finish, so you can choose one, or wear one of each.
To be clear about the materials: these chains are not made of gold, and they are not the "black gold" alloy sold by jewelers. They are steel with a plating. The Franco Link Chain Necklace is 316L stainless steel; the Cuban Link Chain Necklace is stainless steel. Each comes with a black plating or a gold-tone plating (and also in bare, silver-tone steel).
Sizes in black and in gold-tone
| Chain | Gold-tone | Black |
|---|---|---|
| Cuban Link Chain Necklace | 4, 6, 8 mm in 18", 20", 22", 24" | 4, 6, 8 mm in 18", 20", 22", 24" |
| Franco Link Chain Necklace | 6, 9, 13 mm in 22", 26", 28", 30" | 6 mm in 26" to 30"; 9 and 13 mm in 22" to 30" |
Black or gold-tone: how to choose
- Gold-tone catches the light and warms the skin. It is the classic look for a Cuban or Franco chain, and it shows well against white, navy or a tan.
- Black absorbs light. It gives a sharper, more graphic outline, and it looks discreet with dark clothes. In black, a chain reads slightly thinner than the same width in gold-tone.
If you wear a gold-tone watch, a gold-tone chain ties the look together. If your watch is black or you wear mostly dark colors, black is the easier match.
Wearing black and gold-tone together
Two chains, two finishes
Layer a black chain with a gold-tone chain of a different length, about 2" to 4" apart. For example, a 4 mm gold-tone Cuban in 20" over a 6 mm black Franco in 26". Keep one chain clearly finer than the other so they do not compete.
One chain, one contrasting pendant
A gold-tone pendant on a black chain is the simplest way to combine the two. For pendants that already mix black and gold-tone, see our black and gold-tone necklaces.
For more options in a single finish, see our men's black chains and men's gold-tone chains.
Care for plated chains
You can keep them on in the shower, at the gym, at the sea or in the pool. Rinse in clean water after the sea or the pool and dry them. Perfume, chlorine and friction wear black and gold-tone plating over time. When you layer, store the chains apart so they do not rub. Each chain comes with a 1-year warranty against defects, 30-day returns and free shipping over $60.
Black and gold-tone chain FAQ
Is a black gold chain made of gold?
Not here. Our black and gold-tone chains are steel with a black or gold-tone plating.
Can I wear black and gold-tone chains together?
Yes. Choose two different lengths and one finer chain, so the layers stay distinct.
Which lasts longer, black or gold-tone?
Both are platings on steel and both wear gradually with friction, perfume and chlorine. Rinsing after the pool or the sea helps both.
