Gold-tone Franco chain: what you are buying
A "gold Franco chain" can mean very different things, so here is exactly what ours is. The Franco Link Chain Necklace in gold color is 316L stainless steel with a gold-tone plating. The gold is a colored surface layer on a steel chain. It is not a gold chain, and it is priced as a steel chain.
The gold-tone version comes in every size we make: 6, 9 or 13 mm wide, in 22", 26", 28" or 30". The same chain is also available in bare polished steel (silver-tone) and in black plating.
Why a gold-tone plating on steel
- The warm color of a gold chain, on a wide, square Franco link at a steel price.
- A steel core that does not rust and keeps its shape, even at 13 mm.
- A chain you can wear every day, including in the shower and at the gym.
For gold-tone pieces in every link style, see our men's gold-tone chains.
How to keep the gold-tone color
Plating is a surface. Friction, perfume and chlorine wear it slowly, and the Franco's edges are where you will see it first. A few habits help it last:
- Put on perfume, cologne and lotion before the chain, and let them dry.
- Shower, sea and pool are fine. Rinse the chain in clean water after the sea or the pool, then pat it dry.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cloths, polishes and jewelry dips.
- Store it on its own so the edges do not rub against other chains.
Gold-tone, silver-tone or black?
| Finish | Surface | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Gold-tone | Gold-tone plating on steel | Keep perfume and chlorine off it |
| Silver-tone | Bare polished steel, no plating | The easiest: nothing to wear off |
| Black | Black plating on steel | Same care as gold-tone |

Gold Franco chain FAQ
Is the gold-tone Franco made of gold?
No. It is 316L stainless steel with a gold-tone plating. We say it plainly so you know what you are getting.
Will the gold-tone color fade?
With time and wear, the plating can soften at the edges. Keeping perfume and chlorine off it makes a real difference.
Is it covered if something goes wrong?
Yes: a 1-year warranty against defects and 30-day returns. Shipping is free on orders over $60.
