Gold box chain necklace: which length, from 18" to 60 cm

With a box chain necklace, the length decides almost everything: whether the chain hides under a collar, whether a pendant shows over a T-shirt, how close it sits to the neck. A box chain is made of tiny square links joined tight, so it reads as one clean line at any length. This page sorts our gold-tone box chain necklaces by length, so you can pick the one that sits where you want it. "Gold" here is the color: every piece is stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating.

For box chains in every finish, see our main box chains page. To compare the pendants themselves, see our gold-tone box chain pendants.

The plain Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel comes in 18" or 20" in gold-tone; the 22" and 24" lengths exist in silver-tone only. The Nail Cross and the Minimalist Cross also hang from a box chain, but their chain length is not listed, so check the product page before ordering if length matters to you.

Match the length to your neckline

Buttoned shirt

Take the plain chain in 18" or 20". At 1.5 mm it disappears under a closed collar and shows as a thin gold-tone line when you open one button.

Open collar

The plain chain in 20", or the Hollow Double Cross on its 50 cm chain, which places the cross right in the opening of the shirt.

Crewneck T-shirt or knit

Choose a pendant on about 60 cm. The chain clears the neckline and the pendant lies flat on the fabric, at the upper or middle chest.

Build, measuring and layering

These positions are for an average build. On a broad neck or chest, every length sits a little higher: if 18" feels close, take 20". To check before you order, place a string around your neck, let it fall where you want the chain, and measure it. Remember that a pendant hangs below the lowest point of the chain.

To layer, wear the plain 18" or 20" chain above a pendant on 60 cm: the gap keeps the two lines apart. For the plain chain worn on its own, see our thin gold box chain page.

Showers, the gym, the sea and the pool are fine. Rinse the chain in fresh water after salt water or chlorine and dry it; perfume and chlorine wear gold-tone plating gradually. Store it flat or hanging so the fine links do not kink.

FAQ

FAQ

Can I get the plain gold-tone box chain in 24"?

No. In gold-tone it comes in 18" or 20". The 24" length exists in silver-tone, and our gold-tone pendant necklaces on about 60 cm reach a similar point on the chest.

What length is best for a box chain with a pendant?

About 60 cm (24") puts the pendant on the chest, over a T-shirt. 50 cm (20") keeps it at the collarbone, in an open collar.

Is a gold box chain made of gold?

No. It is stainless steel or titanium steel with gold-tone plating. The gold refers to the color only.

What if the length is wrong?

You have 30 days to return it, and every piece carries a 1-year warranty against defects. Shipping is free over $60.
