Men's thin chains: fine steel for every day

A thin chain is the quiet option. It shows at an open collar, disappears under a buttoned shirt and makes a clean base for a pendant. For men, we call a chain thin when it is about 3 mm wide or less.

Every chain in this collection comes in at least one thin width. Some are thin only (the 1.5 mm box chain, the 2.3 mm gold-tone rope, the 3 mm braided rope), others also come wider. Pick the narrow option on the product page.

Thin chain widths, from finest to boldest

Want a chain that is seen from across the room? That is a different look: see our thick chains.

Which link style to choose in a thin chain

At a small width, the type of link matters more than you think.

  • Box chain: square links, smooth and flexible. The most pendant-friendly thin chain.
  • Rope and wheat: twisted or woven links. They look fuller than their width and catch the light.
  • Figaro and cable: classic open links, a little more texture, good worn alone.
  • Snake: one smooth, flat line. Very sleek, but it should be stored flat to avoid kinks. More in our snake chains.

How to wear a thin chain

Under a shirt. 1.5 to 2 mm in 20" or 22" stays hidden under a buttoned collar and shows when you open it.

With a pendant. A thin chain keeps the focus on the pendant. Check that the bail is wider than the chain, and keep the pendant light on very fine chains.

Layered. Two thin chains at different lengths, such as 18" and 22", look intentional. One smooth and one textured works best.

With a watch. A fine chain in the same tone as your watch, bare steel or gold-tone, keeps the look simple.

Caring for a thin steel chain

Our thin chains are stainless steel or titanium steel (a stainless steel alloy), in bare steel or gold-tone plating depending on the model. Fine chains tangle and kink more easily than wide ones:

  • Close the clasp before you put the chain away, and hang it or lay it straight.
  • Wipe it with a soft cloth; wash it now and then with warm water and mild soap, then dry fully.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners, especially on gold-tone plating.
  • Take it off before rough work or contact sports where it could catch.
FAQ

Thin chain FAQ

Are thin chains strong enough for men?

For daily wear, yes, if you treat them as fine jewelry. A woven or box construction holds up better than a very open link at the same width. Take the chain off for rough work or contact sports.

What is the best thin chain to wear under a shirt?

A 1.5 to 2 mm box chain. It lies flat, does not show through fabric and takes a small pendant.

Is a 2 mm chain too thin for a man?

No. 2 mm is a common men's width for a discreet look or a pendant. If you want it to read clearly on its own, go 3 mm.

Thin or thick chain for a first chain?

A 3 mm chain in 20" is the easiest first chain: visible, but it works with almost everything.

What if the width looks different in person?

You have 30-day returns to check it at home, and every chain comes with a 1-year warranty against defects.
