Men's silver-tone chains in polished steel
Every chain on this page has a silver tone, and none of them is made of silver metal. They are stainless steel or titanium steel, a stainless steel alloy. On most of them the silver color is simply the steel itself, polished, with no plating on top. That matters more than it sounds: there is no layer to wear off.
So this page is for the man who wants a cool, clean silver-tone chain and would rather not think about it again.
What polished steel is like to wear
- Color: a cool, slightly gray white. Next to a steel watch, it matches.
- Weight: present without being heavy, so even a wide chain stays comfortable all day.
- Care: no special polish needed. Rinse and dry is enough.
- Finish: on bare steel, the color goes all the way through. A light scratch shows more steel, in the same color.
Two silver-tone models, the Byzantine Link Chain Necklace and the Wheat Link Chain in Titanium Steel, carry a silver-tone plating. Their product pages say so.
Pick your width
- 1.2 to 2 mm: a fine line for a small pendant. The stainless steel box chain goes from 1.2 to 3 mm and from 16" to 28".
- 3 to 4 mm: everyday. The 3 mm braided rope chain is bare titanium steel, the geometric bar link comes in 2 to 4 mm, the cable link starts at 3 mm.
- 5 to 7.5 mm: clearly visible over a T-shirt. The titanium steel wheat chain runs from 3 to 7.5 mm.
- 8 mm and up: heavy and seen. The Byzantine chain in 8 mm, the bold Cuban in 10 mm, the cable link in 10 mm, and the silver Cuban link chain from 6 up to 16 mm.
Pick your length
18" sits close to the neck, 20" at the collarbone, 22" just below it, 24" mid-chest. Silver-tone chains in this collection go from 16" to 31". If you plan to add a pendant, start at 22". To browse one length only, use our 22 inch chains and the other length pages.
What to wear with a silver-tone chain
- Steel watch: the easiest match. Same metal, same tone.
- Dark T-shirt or black knit: a 4 to 6 mm chain stands out clearly against dark fabric.
- White shirt, open collar: a 2 or 3 mm box, snake or rope chain.
- Two chains: keep both silver-tone and leave about 2 inches between them, for example a 20" fine chain above a 22" or 24" heavier one.
- At the wrist: our silver-tone chain bracelets use the same links, so a chain and bracelet can match.
Caring for bare steel
Rinse it in clean water after the sea, the pool or a workout, then dry it with a soft cloth. Polished steel can pick up fine scratches over the years, as any metal does; a soft cloth keeps the shine. Store it apart from other jewelry so links don't rub.
FAQ
Are these chains made of silver?
No. They are stainless steel or titanium steel in a silver tone, and each product page names the exact steel.
Does a stainless steel chain change color?
Bare steel holds its color well. Sweat, salt and chlorine can leave a dull film over time; rinsing and drying the chain is usually enough to bring the shine back.
Is titanium steel better than stainless steel?
Neither is better for daily wear. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, it is not pure titanium. Both are strong and polish well. Choose by link and size, not by the steel name.
What is a good first silver chain for a man?
A 20" chain in 3 to 4 mm, in a rope, box or Cuban link. It is visible, easy to wear, and works with or without a pendant.
Can I wear a silver-tone chain with gold-tone pieces?
You can, but mixing works best when it looks intentional: one tone on the neck, the other at the wrist, not both on the same chain stack.
