Where a chain sits depends on its length. Here is how each length falls on an average build.
Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 56 cm.
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm long: count how many fit along your strip.

Finding your fit
2 or 3 mm: a fine line, right with a linen shirt. 4 or 5 mm: visible under a collar. 20" (51 cm) rests at the collarbone. A flat chain can kink if folded hard: hang it or lay it flat when it's off.

How to wear it
16" (41 cm) sits at the base of the neck, 18" (46 cm) close to it, 20" (51 cm) at the collarbone and 24" (61 cm) on the chest. The 2 and 3 mm are a fine line; the 4 and 5 mm are visible under a collar.
Wear the 2 or 3 mm with a linen shirt open at the neck, or layer it as the short chain above a rope or Cuban. When it is off, hang it or lay it flat.
Living with steel
- Silver tone. This is bare steel. There is no plating to wear off. Shower, sea, gym: it can stay on. A soft cloth brings the shine back.
- Gold tone and black. A plated layer sits on the steel. Water is fine. Chlorine, perfume and constant friction wear it faster. Take it off for the pool, put your cologne on first, and it will last longer.
- What our warranty covers. Clasps that fail and links that break under normal wear, for one year. Normal surface wear isn't a defect, and we'd rather tell you now.

Questions
Does the gold flat snake chain survive a summer at the beach?
Yes, with a little care. The gold tone is a plating over stainless steel: sea water is fine, but sunscreen, perfume and chlorine wear a plating faster, so rinse and wipe it after the beach. The silver is bare steel.
Is the flat snake chain the most minimal chain Marco Maveri sells?
Yes. With no visible links, only a flat surface, it is the most minimal chain in the collection.
Which flat snake necklace length sits at the collarbone?
The 20 inch (51 cm). The 16 and 18 inch sit higher on the neck, and the 24 inch falls to mid-chest. If the length turns out wrong, send it back unworn within 30 days.
Is a 2mm flat snake chain right with a linen shirt?
Yes. 2 or 3 mm reads as a fine line with a linen shirt, while 4 or 5 mm stays visible under a collar.
Does a snake chain kink?
It can if folded hard or knotted. Hang it or lay it flat when you take it off, and avoid wrapping it tightly around your fingers.
Snake vs box chain: what is the difference?
A snake chain hides its links, so it reads as one smooth, flat surface with a single reflection. A box chain shows small square links and has more texture.
Can I put a pendant on a snake chain?
Yes, a light one, on the 3 to 5 mm. Choose a pendant whose loop is slightly wider than the chain, and avoid heavy pendants that could bend the flat chain.
Is a 2mm chain too thin for a man?
Not at all: 2 mm reads as a fine line, a discreet everyday chain that looks right with a linen shirt open at the neck. It is also the classic short chain when you layer two. How much space between two chains when layering?
About 2 inches (5 cm) between them, so they do not tangle and each one shows: 20 in with 22 in, or 20 in with 24 in. Wear the finer chain short and the thicker one long, like the Flat Snake Chain Necklace (2 mm) at 20 in above the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm) at 22 in.
How do I keep my flat snake chain from kinking?
Never fold it hard or wrap it tightly: when it is off, hang it or lay it flat. Put it on and take it off by the clasp, not by pulling the chain. Our Flat Snake Chain Necklace and Flat Snake Chain Bracelet are stainless steel, fine in water.
Can I sleep with my chain on?
Steel will not mind; it is made for constant wear. Comfort is the question: a fine or medium chain (2 to 4 mm) with a smooth profile, like the Flat Snake Chain Necklace or the Cuban Link Chain Necklace (4 mm), is easy to forget. Heavier chains are usually taken off at night.
Can men wear thin chains?
