1.5 mm is fine: it shows at an open collar and disappears under a buttoned one. It takes a small pendant. 18" (46 cm) stays close; 20" (51 cm) rests at the collarbone.

Size guide

Why this link

The Italians call it veneziana. Each link is a tiny cube, so the chain has corners where others have curves. At 1.5 mm it's the quietest chain we sell, and the easiest to forget you're wearing.

How to wear it

18" (46 cm) stays close to the neck, 20" (51 cm) rests at the collarbone, 22" (56 cm) falls on the upper chest and 24" (61 cm) lower on the chest. At 1.5 mm it is a fine line: it shows at an open collar and disappears under a buttoned one.

It works on its own with a T-shirt or an open shirt, or with a small pendant on the 20" or 22". To layer, wear it as the short chain with a thicker chain about 2 inches (5 cm) longer.

Living with steel
  • Silver tone. This is bare steel. There is no plating to wear off. Shower, sea, gym: it can stay on. A soft cloth brings the shine back.
  • Gold tone and black. A plated layer sits on the steel. Water is fine. Chlorine, perfume and constant friction wear it faster. Take it off for the pool, put your cologne on first, and it will last longer.
  • What our warranty covers. Clasps that fail and links that break under normal wear, for one year. Normal surface wear isn't a defect, and we'd rather tell you now.
Shipping and returns
  • Processed within 48 hours, then shipped with tracking. Delivery times by country are in our shipping policy.
  • Free tracked shipping over NZ$110. Below that, the shipping cost is shown at checkout before you pay.
  • 30 days to return it, unworn and in its original packaging. Return postage is on you, unless the piece arrived faulty or wrong.
  • 1-year warranty on clasps and links. Send us 3 or 4 photos and your order number. If it's a defect, we send a new one. No need to post the old one back.

Questions

Will the gold-tone 1.5 mm box chain keep its color?

For a long time, with a little care. The gold color is a plating over titanium steel, so keep perfume, chlorine and hard rubbing away from it. The silver version is the bare steel, with nothing to wear off.

Is there any gold in the gold version of the titanium steel box chain?

No. It is titanium steel with a gold-tone plating, and the silver version is the same titanium steel left bare. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy that does not rust.

Should I pick 18 or 20 inches for the 1.5 mm box chain?

18 inches (46 cm) stays close to the neck, 20 inches (51 cm) rests at the collarbone. If the length turns out wrong, send it back unworn within 30 days.

Can I layer the 1.5 mm box chain with a thicker chain?

Yes, it is fine enough to sit under a bolder chain. Leave at least 5 cm (2 in) between the two lengths, for example this one at 18 inches with a second chain at 20 or 22 inches, so each lies on its own line.

Is a 1.5 mm chain too thin for a man?

Not if you want something discreet. 1.5 mm reads as a fine line at the collar and is easy to forget you are wearing. If you want the chain itself to be noticed from a distance, look at 3 mm and up.

Box chain vs rope chain: what is the difference?

A box chain is made of small square links, so it looks flat, geometric and quiet. A rope chain twists links into a spiral that catches more light and looks bolder at the same width.

Is titanium steel the same as titanium?

No. Titanium steel is a stainless steel alloy, not pure titanium. Like stainless steel, it does not rust.

What size pendant can I put on it?

A small one. A pendant about 10 to 20 mm wide suits a 1.5 mm chain, and the pendant's loop (the bail) should be slightly wider than the chain so it slides freely.

Is 1.5mm too thin for a men's chain?

1.5 mm is a very fine chain: it shows at an open collar and disappears under a buttoned one, which is exactly why some men want it. The Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel is 1.5 mm, in bare steel or gold-tone, and takes a small pendant. For something more visible, go to 3 or 4 mm.

What thickness chain is good for a pendant?

For a small or medium pendant, a 2 to 3 mm chain is enough; for a heavy pendant, go to a sturdier chain. The Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel takes a small pendant, the Braided Titanium Steel Chain can carry a medium one on 22 or 24 inches, and the Franco Link Chain Necklace is our strongest base for a heavy pendant (26 in).

Box chain or rope chain: which should I get?

A box chain is smooth and geometric, a clean line that suits a pendant; a rope chain is twisted and catches more light, so it stands well on its own. Quiet and minimal: the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel (1.5 mm). More texture: the Rope Chain Necklace in Stainless Steel (3 to 5 mm). Both are steel and can stay on in the shower.

Are box chains strong enough for everyday wear?

Yes, in steel. A box chain is made of tight square links, and ours are stainless or titanium steel with a lobster clasp. For a fine box chain with a pendant, the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel (1.5 mm) or, sturdier, the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace (3 mm). Every piece is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects such as a link that breaks under normal wear.

What chain should I put a cross on?

A chain strong enough for the cross and long enough to let it sit on the chest: 22 to 24 in. Small cross: a fine box chain like the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel. Heavier cross: the Franco Link Chain Necklace (6 mm) at 26 in. Or take a cross that comes on its chain, like the Lord's Prayer Cross Pendant Necklace.

Box chain for men?

Two box chains: the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel (1.5 mm, silver-tone or gold-tone) and the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace (1.2 to 3 mm, 16 to 28 in). Square links, a clean line, ideal for a pendant. See box chains.
