Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace
Find your necklace length
Where a chain sits depends on its length. Here is how each length falls on an average build.
Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 56 cm.
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm long: count how many fit along your strip.
| Length | Where it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 46 cm | Base of the neck | Choker look · layering base |
| 51 cm | On the collarbone | Classic · everyday |
| 56 cm | Top of the chest | Versatile · with a pendant |
| 61 cm | Mid-chest | Statement · pendant-friendly |
Layering tip: pick two lengths 5–10 cm apart so each chain sits on its own.

Finding your fit
The 1.2mm and 1.5mm widths are subtle and ideal for holding a small pendant. The 2mm to 3mm widths are more noticeable when worn alone. A 20-inch chain sits at the collarbone, while 22 to 24 inches rests on the mid-chest.
The details
The box chain is built from square links connected to create a clean, geometric line. Each polished facet catches the light, giving the chain a subtle but constant presence as you move.
Wear it alone for a minimal look under an open collar. Its simple structure also makes it a solid foundation for layering with other chains or adding your own pendant.
Specifications
How to wear it
16" (41 cm) sits at the base of the neck, 18" (46 cm) close to it, 20" (51 cm) at the collarbone, 22" to 24" (56 to 61 cm) on the mid-chest, and 26" to 28" (66 to 71 cm) lower down for a long pendant look. 1.2 and 1.5 mm are subtle; 2 to 3 mm show clearly on their own.
Wear it alone under an open collar, or over a T-shirt in 2 mm or more. For layering, pair a fine 20" with a slightly wider 24" so the two lines stay apart.
Why this link
Small square links joined tight give the chain flat facets and corners where most chains have curves, and each polished facet catches the light as you move. The silver tone is the natural color of the stainless steel, so there is no plating to wear through. It suits the man who wants one plain chain for every day, or a clean base for his own pendant.
Living with steel
- Silver tone. This is bare steel. There is no plating to wear off. Shower, sea, gym: it can stay on. A soft cloth brings the shine back.
- What our warranty covers. Clasps that fail and links that break under normal wear, for one year. Normal surface wear isn't a defect, and we'd rather tell you now.
Shipping and returns
- Processed within 48 hours, then shipped with tracking. Delivery times by country are in our shipping policy.
- Free tracked shipping over A$90. Below that, the shipping cost is shown at checkout before you pay.
- 30 days to return it, unworn and in its original packaging. Return postage is on you, unless the piece arrived faulty or wrong.

Questions
Will the silver tone of the stainless steel box chain fade over time?
No. The silver tone is the natural color of the stainless steel, not a coating, so there is no plating to wear off. A wipe with a soft cloth brings back the polish.
Can I keep the 1.2 mm box chain on while lifting weights?
Water and sweat will not hurt it, since stainless steel does not rust. At 1.2 mm it is the finest width of this chain, so take it off for heavy lifting or contact sports where it could catch on equipment.
Which box chain width suits a pendant I already own?
1.2 or 1.5 mm for a small pendant, 2 to 3 mm for a medium or heavier one. Check that the pendant's loop (the bail) is slightly wider than the chain so it slides freely.
Is a 28 inch box chain too long for a man?
No, it is a long pendant length. 28 inches (71 cm) falls below the chest, for a pendant worn low or an oversized look. For the chain worn alone, 20 to 24 inches is the usual range.
2mm or 3mm box chain: which one should I pick?
2 mm is noticeable but still discreet, a good everyday width alone or with a medium pendant. 3 mm is the most visible width of this chain and reads clearly over a T-shirt.
What length is right for a pendant?
22" or 24" (56 or 61 cm) for most men. The pendant then sits on the upper to mid-chest, where it is visible and moves naturally.
Will a thin box chain break easily?
Not with normal wear, since each link is a closed square. The 1.2 mm is the most delicate width, so avoid hanging a heavy pendant on it or catching it on a bag strap. Links that break under normal wear are covered by our 1-year warranty.
Is it a good gift for a man who does not wear jewelry yet?
Yes. A plain silver box chain in 1.5 or 2 mm at 20" (51 cm) is easy to wear with anything.
What does a 1.2mm box chain look like on a man?
Very fine: a thin, smooth line, mostly for carrying a pendant or as the short chain in a layered pair. The Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace comes from 1.2 to 3 mm and from 16 to 28 in, in polished silver-tone steel. For a chain worn alone, 2.4 or 3 mm will show more.
What's the thinnest chain you sell for men?
The finest is 1.2 mm, on the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace, and 1.5 mm on the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel. Both are polished steel and suited to a small pendant or a very discreet everyday look. More in thin chains.
Box chain vs wheat chain for a pendant?
Both carry a pendant well. A box chain is a smooth, neat line that lets the pendant stand out; a wheat chain has texture and a rounder, sturdier look. Fine and quiet: the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace. Textured: the Titanium Steel Wheat Chain. See pendant necklaces.
Which holds up better over time, a rope chain or a box chain?
Both are durable in steel. A rope has texture and stays lively; a box chain is a clean, geometric line that a quick wipe keeps bright. In bare steel, like the Braided Titanium Steel Chain (rope) or the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace (box), there is no plating to wear off. Every piece has a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Rolo chain vs box chain?
A rolo (or O-link) chain has round, uniform links; a box chain has square ones. Rolo looks softer, box looks sharper. Our round-link option is the O-Link Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel (16 in, silver-tone or gold-tone); for box, the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace from 1.2 to 3 mm.
Are box chains strong enough for everyday wear?
Yes, in steel. A box chain is made of tight square links, and ours are stainless or titanium steel with a lobster clasp. For a fine box chain with a pendant, the Box Chain Necklace in Titanium Steel (1.5 mm) or, sturdier, the Stainless Steel Box Chain Necklace (3 mm). Every piece is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects such as a link that breaks under normal wear.
